I recently moved from Oregon back to Alabama as my husband is in the military...I have applied for FIFTY-SEVEN jobs which were all advertised in various places, and have not been hired for ONE...not ONE. I have five years' experience in psych and 1 in med/surg...I canNOT for the life of me figure out why I'm not getting a job and it's quite disheartening. *sigh*

I am so sorry to hear of your difficulties. Sad to say, Alabama is not the greatest state for RNs, pay and positions. Hiring freezes everywhere. Your best bet is try looking for a position in an outpatient, LTC or palliative/hospice. Given that you've experience in psych, palliative may be an option.
Good luck...
PS. In all honesty, what I see is that many corporations, hospitals included, use the excuse of the "bad economy" to force more work on their employees. For RN, higher nurse patient ratio, knowing that few will rebut due to fear of losing job. It's a very difficult environment out there for we nurses. We are the first to be thrown under the bus, work the hardest, and last to be recognized as exemplary employee. But then that is nothing new there.
Good luck again with your search for a position...

What a shame - you have so much experience going to waste! Why don't you contact all the nursing agencies near you? Also try looking outside the square, like going into doctor's offices, nursing homes, and leaving your CV there.
Good luck!
Thanks for all the advice guys...unfortunately I have tried all of it...contacted the base, was told 'sorry'...I have applied for everything from LTC to OR to even PEDS...not even a call-back. I was told by one lady that since everybody does this online application stuff, by the time I see the ad, 50 people may have already applied and they just don't weed through that many applications. And I learned a long time ago to not mention the military LOL. That's a sure-fire way to not get hired! Ah well, thanks for letting me fuss...I'm sure something will come along someday.
