So sad...rejected for Spring 2005

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

i am just so sad and had to share my disappointment. i received the "small" letter from the nursing program to which i applied.

the program requirements are very objective...it is a point system with 129 points possible based on gpa in pre-requisite classes, volunteer and work experience. those admitted for spring 2005 had between 113.55 and 122 points. i had 108.2, and that is with a 3.8 gpa in my pre-req's.

my downfall was not getting my cna last year. i made a very conscious decision to work in an industry i hate to get the bigger paycheck (about twice what i would have made as a new cna) while taking my pre-req's, as opposed to getting my cna and getting experience. that decision has come back to bite me in the a$$ big time. at the time i was also volunteering so i thought i would be okay. however, when work and school and family issues got too overwhelming, i dropped out of volunteer work. had i continued volunteering or had i gone for my cna i would have had about 114-115 points and i would be in school starting in march.

i am just so bummed!!!!! :crying2:

i had to vent. i am planning on doing a quick 3-week or 6-week cna course at a vo-tech school in the next couple months and i am back volunteering. applications for fall '05 are due in april, so i won't have enough time to gain earn points by then. i am now looking at winter '06.

i am thankful that the program i chose admits students 3-quarters a year. this might also give me some incentive to try for the bsn program at the university of washington for fall 2006 which is considered on of the best in the country. first step is to get out of this hellish desk job and get into health care any which way i can.

thank you for listening.

tabitha

Hi Tabitha,

Sorry about the bad news. If you were planning on doing the BSN, you might as well try for that. I had been getting exasperated with not getting into the ADN program and finally decided to just apply for the BSN. I found out a couple of weeks ago that I did get in and I'll be starting Fall 2005. Good luck!

Kris

Sorry to hear about that... I know you must be disappointment. Good luck next year (just think of all that extra time you have to get ready/prepare!)! :)

I know how ya feel

Keep pluggin away. I was not admitted to the program I wanted to go to that started this past fall. I was almost did not apply to another program that was starting because I was so bummed and felt I would not make it in. I am glad I did because I am taking the last few prereqs and I start clinical this May.

Hang in & apply for the BSN and the ADN. You could be deciding between the two of them later this year :)

Sorry about the bad news, have you looked into other programs? Their application deadlines may not have passed so you may be able to start a nursing program soon, even if it's not the EXACT one you want.

I'm anxiously awaiting my acceptance/decline letter, so I can somewhat empathize...

Hi Tabitha,

Sorry about the bad news. I have quite a few friends that also got the small letter from Shoreline. I've heard that they are the hardest school to get into, as far as cc's are concerned. I have only applied at Everett. Our applications were due on Feb. 1st. I got called for an interview on the 14th, it went okay. It wasn't anything that you could prepare for unless you knew what they were going to ask. I will hopefully know by the beginning of March. I am so scared of opening the mailbox and not seeing a big letter.

I read some of your other posts and was saw that you went to an information session at Everett. Have you applied there? Applications for fall are due in July. I also have a 3.8 in my prereqs. I am volunteering at the hospital about ten hours a month. I have also taken the CNA class, but didn't get state tested in time to get the points for that. I'm still in Micro right now. I think that it's actually pretty god that I even got interiewed. I think if you applied at Everett you wouldn't have any problem getting in. Also Med-prep in Everett is a great place to take the CNA training. They have am and pm classes. If you need you can switch between the two to work better with your schedule.

Good luck to you!

Gabby

P.S. We have also been trying to have a baby for a long time now. I was sure that I'd have a baby by now. Since things haven't worked out as planned we have decided to wait until after I'm done with school. It freaks me out because we have been trying for so long, that if I wait it will even be harder in a couple of years. I also know though that if I did become pregnant it would be really hard for me to leave my infant at daycare and go back to school. Plus what about when the baby gets sick, is up all night etc. I got a puppy a few months ago and that has really helped me to make up my mind about waiting.

I'm sorry about the rejection letter. I've gotten quite a few of those myself.

As mad/sad as you are now, it does give you sort of an "inside" track now for next year. To get everything in order, and know what you need to work on and accomplish before applying next year.

I got a lot more pre-req's done after my rejection, and also expanded my area of where I was willing to travel to for a nursing program. I had only applied to one -within a 40 min drive. I expanded to those within an hour and a 1/2 drive - no joking (price of living in the boonies!), and got into two.

I wish you the best of luck! Keep plugging along and don't give up. You WILL get in!

hi tabitha,

sorry about the bad news. i have quite a few friends that also got the small letter from shoreline. i've heard that they are the hardest school to get into, as far as cc's are concerned. i have only applied at everett. our applications were due on feb. 1st. i got called for an interview on the 14th, it went okay. it wasn't anything that you could prepare for unless you knew what they were going to ask. i will hopefully know by the beginning of march. i am so scared of opening the mailbox and not seeing a big letter.

hi gabby:

thanks for your reply! it sounds like we are in similar situations, for sure. congrats on the interview at everett...that is definitely a good sign. with a cna under your belt

and a 3.8 you should be a shoe in for fall, if you don't get in spring.

i looked into their program a bit, and it looked very solid! i liked that their admission process was a little more subjective...actually, as a student applying for a position in the program, it was a bit infuriating. however, i liked that they wanted to get to know the person rather than just look at numbers, which is how shoreline does it. what kind of questions do they ask you in the interview?

i decided not to purse everett for a couple reasons. primarily because i live in seattle (west seattle, actually) and want to work in seattle. all everett's clinicals are in snohomish county except for one rotation at harborview. i could probably deal with the commute if i was really excited about the program (hubby works at boeing so we could have car pooled). but, i just really like the program, the people, and the reputaion at shoreline. i have friends who have gone there and i've talked to a lot of nurses about the various programs around and shoreline always comes up on top. originally i thought i'd be able to get into the uw, but based on those admissions standards i doubt i could get into the university, let alone the nursing program!

based on the prior quarters i figured i'd have a 50-50 shot at getting in at shoreline in spring. i had 108.2 points, the past two quarters the lowest accepted was 109, and historically spring admissions are a little less competitive than fall & winter. i was blown out of the water because the lowest admitted this quarter was 113.55 points. ugh!!! now i am floundering trying to figure out what i can do in the 7-weeks to up my points. my options are to quit my job (i work as a desk jocky at an insurance agency) and volunteer full time or magically land a cna job tomorrow and get certified the next day and work over 192 by april 11th. it could happen, right? i've looked into med-prep and also nursing assistant training institute in shoreline. i am going to see if i can get hired and trained on the job at a long term facility, first. if not, off to med-prep i go.

as for the baby issue, for now we are going to keep trying. hubby can work from home quit a bit. shoreline will let you begin their program and voluntarily withdrawal for a quarter or two without having to reapply. i am 33 so i feel like i need to pull out all the stops in that department. there was a great threat a couple days ago with someone saying she was ready to have babies but also wanted to go to nursing school. overwhelmingly people said to wait - don't do both if you can help it...she was only 25 so she had some time. i don't relish the idea of taking a break from my schooling, but i really want to be a mom and a nurse. i just wish i had figured out the nurse part 10-years ago and i would have this problem. :)

good luck to you!

I appreciate your kind words of support. I do feel like I know what I need to do now to make it happen. Luckily the program I am most interested in admits students 3-times per year so I don't have to wait too long to try again. I probably won't make it for Fall, but you better believe I'll be at the top of their stack in the Winter!

Congrats on getting into 2-schools! That rocks!
