Question...does anyone have some good snack ideas to pack for all-day class and clinicals? Need something that will satisfy..that I can buy at the store. Don't care much for vending machines...to expensive!!!
Thanks for your ideas.
Another MAJOR factor to take into consideration especially for those that are afraid of gaining weight in nursing school is meal portion & snack portion. You really don't need to consume alot for a snack. I learned this from my personal trainer. I don't know the exact calorie/protein/carbohydrates intake that matches what a snack should be, but do research it. I used to bring snack items all the time to HighSchool. These would consist of healthy snacks like apple slices, saltless pretzels, carrots, celery, cherrios, etc. and I would snack alot. The point is that don't just focus on snacks as your meal/something that will hold you over until you get a good meal. Just sharin my story is all .
i would also suggest that you buy a cooler or a lunch bag and plan ahead. i'm all for saving every penny that i can and also eating healthy. since i have a busy schedule 8am-8pm, i always have my lunch/snacks packed. things you'll find in my lunch bag include (it's half the size of my microwave and there's enough room for my ice packs:cool:):
2 packs of stonyfield's organic greek yogurt (yes greek!) which has 12 grams of protein in each pack and calcium, milkshakes are also a good idea.
2 bottles of nestle purified water (it's cheaper to buy the 24pack),
1/2 liter of home made sweet tea with lemons,
4 snackbars (i love kellogs fiberplus chocolate chip chewy bars and south beach living chocolate flavored high protein cereal bars),
a bowl of fruits (depending on what's in season of course and i cut them up the night before and keep them refrigerated except for apples. my favorites this season are watermelons, kiwis, strawberries and mangoes),
a bowl of meal (it could be my left over tuna salad, rice and beans [i usually warm it up at the school's cafeteria] or a bowl of salad),
2 aspartame free candies (my substitute for gum) lol!
take care and good luck!
thanks for your sharing. thanks for sharing this useful information. it's great.

Well last semster I gained to much weight and spent too much eating from the caf... ugg... since I start tommorow in the nursing program, I have planned and pre-made my lunches and snacks...
This week, I have made whole wheat pasta salad, no diary, just ww pasta, cherry tomatoes, red peppers and a kraft vingerette thats low cal.
I also have packed a can o' soup, and melba toasts, raw carrots, nuts, and 2 curve bars and an oragne. And for breakfast I am eating oatmeal with rasins.
I also have two water bottles 1.5 liters each to keep me hydrated.
Hopefully I can avoid weight gain... I really need to becareful.
since I work full time and go to school full time I have to pack a whole lot!!! let me share what I do.
1-
I get those flax wraps at walmart that are low in carb and real cheat to like 2.49 for 6 wraps!
I grab 3 eggs and scramble it, mix with diced fat free ham, onions and red pepers and some low fat shreded muzzarela and then i make 3 wraps with that mix, wrap it tight with clear wrap and then foil (some times if you do straight up foil it will stick!)
with the other 3 left over wraps i grill 1 chicken brest and slice it up and play around, one garlic, one buffalo, the other honey mustard whatever i want!
I hard boil 3 eggs and make 3 ham and cheese(all low fat) on a wheat bread and have that for breaftast alternating one day burrito, one day egg and sandwich!
then before lunch i like to eat a slim jim! you can buy a box at walmart with 40 for 6 bucks!! either that or a quaker granolla bar, also on sale at walmart low sugar 18 of them for 3 bucks!!!
2 for lunch i actually cook a box of dream fields pasta, you can also get it at walmart for 2.19. I cook a box of penne, and just put a bit of olive oil in it and live it in separate containers on my fridge! then I can choose which sauce i want for the day, marinara, or just diced tomatoes with fresh basil, or even only garlic and olive oil!!!
i also made some lean meatballs that are ready to go already cooked and frozen! i will have that and a salad
and for dinner i usually eat whatever i have, if not i will eat a lean cousine!
I love those crystal light juice packs! the orange, and also white grape are great!!! you can get the walmart brand pink lemonade, cherry, or fruit punch!!!
I always have apples, bananas, cantaloupe and some other fruit
there u go!!!
oh and i found the bento on sale!
Just be careful about how much "snacking" you are doing.
We had this group in our class that for only a 2 hour class, would bring an assortment of snacks.
Guess who ended up gaining the most weight???
If you eat breakfast and lunch...for an all-day class, you shouldn't need more than one snack.

I'm diabetic, so I am queen of the snacks! I usually munch something mid morning because I can't do heavy breakfast (usually some coffee and a bagel, or cereal.) My fave snack is a PB&J on wheat bread. I use 1/2 serving of the lower carb jam, and 1.5 servings of peanut butter. It keeps me going. I also do baby carrots, cucumbers, apples (I bring a knife with me because slices tend to brown), cheese and crackers, peanut butter filled pretzels, and trail mix. String cheese is great, too. I carry it all in a Thermos lunch bag, with an ice pack thrown in to keep everything cool. Invest in some plastic containers in all sizes. I've saved so much money by making my own snack sized portions in gladware! That protein bar recipe looks interesting - but is it truly easy? There's lots of ingredients and mixing bowls in it.
I also carry a liter bottle of water with me every day. Hydration is my friend
Those single serving packets of Crystal Light (or the equivalent, I use the store brand) are awesome for those.
I'm intrigued about hummus! I'll have to try it some time. My BF says it's delicious but I'm leery about chickpeas :chuckle
