Hi Guys!!
I am a long time member of this forum, recently inactive for various reasons..anyway, hello to all of those who know me, and those of you that dont!! :)
Heres a little question i wanted to ask the forum, this week my trust has introduced a ban on nurses smoking in uniform by the front door of the hospital as it gives the patients a bad impression and looks unprofessional, all smokers (im not one myself, i add) must now go to the back of the hospital to smoke in the loading bay area.
there are smoking shelters at the front of the hospital (patient use) the nurses must not use these but go to the rear of the hospital as stated above.
so, my question is...what is your opinion? is this right, does a smoking nurse look unprofessional?, whats next, fat nurses banned from eating crisps in their uniform??
I am not saying that the trust is wrong (heaven forbid) just wondered what you all think?
I just thinK smoking is a dirty habit full stop. It usually seems to be white nurses who do this
Your entitled to your opinion, but to be honest, to generalise about any group of society is not wise as your usually proven to be incorrect.
I wonder, as a nurse how do you manage to provide health education to patients who smoke, I can't imagine them being receptive to a someone who is so judgemental

Thankyou. You've restored my faith in the profession.
To all those being judgemental on here, I hope you never have a garlic meal or a curry the night before, because guess what, you stink too. I hope you never wear cheap perfume or suffer from BO or have a drink the night before and come in smellingof booze (and quite a few nurses do all these things). I hope none of you are overweight because that's means you're weak-willed and disgusting to those who aren't.
In fact as nurses you should be perfect in every way.
And if you do anything I don't like, then you should be banned from doing it.
See, we can all be judgemental and some of the views espoused on here denigrate the profession.
I live in Illinois and we are a no-smoking-in-public-places state!Yeah!!
No smoking in restaurants, shopping malls, hospitals, anywhere in public. At the hospitals, staff have to go approx 1/4 mile down the road to smoke.
I love the US. You can't have a cigarette in public, but guns, they're OK

I love this! Only difference is guns kill quickly, but you can get away with smoking for many years before it lands you in hospital on oxygen and coughing your lungs up. Yuk! Who wants to end up like that?
Mind you, I have never smoked a cigarette so don't know what it is like to be addicted, must be awful.
But the say you can do anything if you just put your mind to it...and if you really want it.
To me smoking is such a low class thing and trashy too.
Just like being on Facebook, yet about 80% of the nurses I know seem to spend half their (very sad) lives on there. I don't smoke by the way, just I really don't think I'm ignorant enough to judge most of my patients as being trashy and low class because they smoke. Or even go on Facebook.

Work in dementia care as I have done and you'll realise there are ways to go, and ways to live, that are far, far worse.
In fact I'm even tempted to start smoking if it means I can avoid such an end.

So how do you provide health education Billie, as a nurse it's fundamental to your care of your patients and your generalisations are not going to help really.
It's an addiction like any other, unfortunate for those who struggle to quit and have long term health problems as a result.
I don't like to see nurses smoke, it doesn't portray a very good image and makes it difficult to promote a healthy life style, non smoking hospitals are obviously a good thing, but having only areas that staff have to smoke with patients is not good.
If we are going to help our staff to give up we need to provide them with the education and support they need, and if they are struggling we need to provide them with areas away from the publics view to support their addiction.
Telling them it's a trashy low class habit is not going to help, and in fact it really isn't restricted to what you would traditionally consider the working class. Some of the most educated and sophisticated people I have met smoke, they know the risks and have chosen to continue.

I am also surprised that they are allowed to smoke on hospital grounds at all. I think being allowed to smoke at the rear entrance of the facility is a reasonable compromise.
