Hello! Yes, I am a slow reader...well at least for nursing books. *hehe* Well I have found a few helpful tips that I wanted to share to you all that helped me.
BEFORE READING
1. Read chapter summaries, overviews first from an introductory book (ie. Incredibly made easy, LVN fast facts)
2. Do NCLEX questions from that topic to know what is important . plus you do nclex questions to not only practice but for patter recognition.
3. Write down rationales and topics
4. Look a pictures of disease if you need to first. The more disgusting the better! I kid you not every time I think if the disease disorder of "hydrocele" I think that picture online a huge balloon like testicle and interesting as this sounds, my mind remembers the etiology, patho, nursing interventions, etc just from that picture. Its like a memory 'trigger'
DURING READING
While you are reading ask yourself clinical type questions. I found a great questionnaire from istudentnurse(dot)com .
And of course talk to your teachers about EVERYTHING. I even showed my professor my notes to make sure i was picking up whats important. Feedback is how we learn.
last TRY TO READ AHEAD before lecture
This may be time consuming but helped me get through it :)
