sleeping staff

Published

It's incredible! just went down stairs to use their xerox machine and everyone of their staff members is sound asleep, all wrapped up in blankets and "Mouth Wide Open." They just don't care about why they are here. Should something happen....................I pity them! I'm sure they'd cover it all up somehow. I am so glad I don't work with that crew... This is on a nightly basis! You'd think someone would want to be alert and functioning. Snoozing is one thing, but not everyone at the same time...

"Hello?," the clue phone...it's for you!"

Thank you ACNORN and yes I see sleeping on the job as FRAUD, pure and simple. I could make a big deal about this and I SHOULD...but I'd wind up being bullied on the job and believe me all of these "sleepers" are very, very capable of doing such an outrageous demoralizing, dehumanizing, destructive and criminal act that to me, it's just not worth it. I don't want to become the whistle blower and have myself put into that position by these immoral rats to basically have my life ruined to the point of no return. I shouldn't have to be destroyed for doing the right thing, but sadly enough this is what will happen should I decide to persue this matter. I'm hoping that given enough rope, they'll hang themselves. Sooner or later something will happen that they won't be able to "cover up," but it seems that these kinds of wrong doers never pay the price. If you've ever been bullied or have seen someone go down by being bullying it's not a pretty picture. I've seen it, and I don't ever want to see it again especially if it involves myself. I have worked at this facility for almost 30 years and at this stage of the game, I'm not about to set myself up for this kind of criminal behavior by my peers. If there was only something that I could do that would guarantee me 100% anonymousity, (is that a word?) other than being in the witness protection program then I would persue this, but nothing is guaranteed so I choose to stay out of it. If you've ever seen the movie, "The Insider" you'll know what I'm talking about. If not, try renting it sometime and watch what happens to a whistle blower...things can become very ugly. I don't want that kind of aggravation. It's too darn destructive.

MMmmmm, Is anyone familiar with micro-sleep?

Acording to this text book im taking a gander at, staff working long night shifts (8 hours, plus) experiance micro-sleep beacuse the mind wont allow it to engage in full sleep. starting at a fraction of a second and increasing in duration as the person gets more and more tired, so inner a manner, everyone sleeps on a night shift :p

If and when I get tired, I make rounds...with my flashlight mind you, get a drink, step outside in this frigid cold weather we're having for a minute or two and bingo, I'm wide awake again.

Hmmmmmm....BritishStudent, are you one of those sleeping people???? BEWARE...BE ALERT...someone is watching you sleep.

Thank you ACNORN for saying it with flair and a little fire :)

When I worked in LTC, a nurse was caught sleeping by a surprise visit from the DON. Said nurse was suspended for a week, during the time she was off, the dietary manager quit. The sleeping nurse was promoted to Dietary Manager upon her return.

That is a funny but sobering reality. Stuff like that happened all the time at the hospital I worked at. I was an admitting clerk for 3yrs making 7 dollars an hour, wide awake all night!!! I would have to "look" for the nurses before I could register the patients, they would be sound asleep making like 30 dollars an hour in the ER, and getting raises regularly!!! It was one of the reasons I am getting my ADN now!! If those sleepyheads could become RNs then I knew my night owl butt could do it!!! Then I can be up all night making 30 dollars an hour!!!!:chuckle

...these nurses have no reason not to sleep all day before thier nites if they wish.

Oops! Being a 12 hour night shift nurse I beg to differ with that quote.

I don't sleep at all during my shift but a lot of nurses do take naps...on their break...making sure their patients are covered. Some forego their shorter breaks and combine them into an hour long nap time. It's understood that if there's a code on the unit everyone returns to their assignment. I have no problem with naps on nights as long as it's safe for the unit.

I only sleep 3-4 hours (5-6 on a good day) and most of the people I work with do the same because of daytime family obligations.

I could see it happening, MAYBE on an unpaid break, depending on the coverage while on break. But me, just couldn't do it. Waaaayyy too paranoid.

Working the night shift, it seems that I'm always tired no matter how much sleep I get, but when I go to work, my patients are my first and only responsibility. Since I'm getting paid to take care of them, I should be alert enough to know if and when they need me so sleeping, whether it be micro sleep, MACRO sleep or whatever kind of sleep is not an option for one who is on duty. Paranoia in this case is a good thing... I call it common sense.

I can see if you are on the clock and not on a break. But what one does on their 30 minutes is their business just as long as they are on time!!!!! Sounds like a bunch of daytimers on this thread. I have to admit it is hard staying awake, and even though you sleep during the day it is not the same. I won't make excuses they should have been fired because a patient could be dying or anything and someone must be alert. Sounds like a case of abuse. If I am really tired I nap on my break but for the most part I don't sleep too many back biting people that loves opportunity.......

we have unpaid breaks at my workplace so on my break I do whatever I wanna do

if that includes putting my feet up and shutting my eyes so be it...

on the rare occasion we get proper breaks it isnt uncommon for ppl to nap, I dont see anything wrong with it , its on our own time, and we are not being paid to sleep

if it was a paid break I might feel a little different about it ...

I dont nap for the most part because I'm a heavy sleeper and they would never be able to wake me up if I were to sleep

but still , theres a difference as to whether you're sleeping on the clock or on your break...

its not a night shift thing either, I've worked days and see ppl napping on their breaks in the breakroom ,specially on weekends.

I usually get stuck with my break at 4am-5am so I couldnt really sleep even if I wanted to cuz at that point I'm wide awake and counting down the time til I can get the heck out of work

but just wanted to clairfy that in my opinion theres a difference between snoozing on the company dime and napping on your own time, wow poetry

talk of sleep is very inspiring :)

Speaking as a night shift nurse I think it is unprofessional to sleep on the job at any time of day. But then I think it is also wrong to just sit and read a magazine, other than when on break. There is always something productive that can be done and I am being paid to do it. Ok that said I can talk real tough and truely do feel this way but I would not snitch either. Those work place bullies just suck. I would however look out for the pt as I feel there safety is at risk. Also cant stand an awake slacker. Ok I am done.
