SJRCC?

U.S.A. Florida

I heard SJRCC has an RN program and it actually requires less pre reqs than FCCJ is this true? Is it better to do the nursing program at SJRCC I also heard you dont have to take a math class? wow I honestly think I would do anything to get out of college algebra at FCCJ. So has anybody looked into their program or pre reqs?

Not great. Some have gotten jobs at Shands in Lake City (ER) and Gainesville (peds), some at florida hospital in Bunnell. Flagler now requires a bsn to hire. I am not looking yet. I'm also a professional photographer and am back into that for right now. I am still in school completing my prereqs to go to UCF online bsn program as soon as possible too so, I'm working on all that and waiting until the job market gets a little better w/in the coming year. There are jobs, it might not be someones top pick, but you gotta start somewhere!

Yes, SJRCC does not require a chemistry class. I am graduating in December and I have to say it has not been easy due to disorganization of curriculum, but if you are dedicated it is doable. :D Let me know if I can be of more help and good luck......you can do it!!

Hi nursebethie, I have a question and I know its almost been a year since you graduated but I have heard sooooo many negative things about the teachers at SJRCC, I was wondering if you could shed some light on that.

I actually just graduated in August 2009. I think it is so hard to be objective about teachers. What makes a student think a teacher is good or bad? Is it their knowledge or (or lack of) or teaching ability (or lack of) or meanness or niceness? I think all programs have a nurse Ratched on board and all have some teachers everyone loves. Also I only attended on the OP campus and Palatka has some different teachers and I think they will be starting an additional program on the St. Augustine campus w/in a year or so and who knows who will be teaching there.

Also I have nothing to compare it to. It's the only one I've ever been to! Whatever these teachers did or not do to support my education, I made it my personal goal to pass every semester and to pass nclex on the 1st try, which I did.

Did I like some teachers better than others? Yes. I picked SJRCC because it was the most convenient for me at the time and now I have my RN and it's done. What school does is prepare you to take and pass nclex and start out as a safe nurse. How you really learn to be a nurse is to start working as a nurse.

Don't know if this helps or not but best of luck to you.

Thank you it was a great help. You know I just have read some of the threads online and I have the same questions that you had about the teaching skill/knowledge or lack of as well. I read on one threads how some student sued the Nursing program, how the dean of nursing hung up in one students face, how they fired one teacher because of failing the whole entire class ( I don't know if this was Orange Park or Palatka). I then have all the same questions that you stated. You have teachers that you love and you have to teachers that you don't love, I have noticed that students who try, put in 200%, who come to class on time and don't leave early are the ones who truly pass. I guess its the amount of effort you put forth, if you give 10% why not expect to receive 110% back. You should expect to receive what you put out. So I want to say thank you for the info and also KUDOS on passing the NCLEX.

I was wondering if anyone who has been at SJRCC Palatka could tell me the schedule they have during the year. For example, for semester one, do you have clinicals MWF from 8am-5pm. And then class on T and TH from 8-10 am typically? I am trying to plan for going to nursing school there, but was curious about the schedule since it is primarily clinicals during the week and I know these may vary for each semester..I am guessing. I have a child and am curious about the child care I will need from my husband and maybe pre-school if I do get in to the school. Thanks for any help!!!

Carla

I just graduated from SJRCC last spring and the first semster clinics were only one day a week at a nursing home. I believe they were on Fridays from 6-5, but I can't really remember. The second semester we went to school two days a week and had clinics two days a week. Psych clinics were 2 or three days week, and lecture one day a week in the summer. Then the last semester the clinics were whenever the nurse you were precepting with was working. If you did get accepted make sure you apply to work source's wia program they helped several people in my class with child care and tution.

Thanks so much for this reply. I was thinking that the clinicals would have me going 3-4 days per week for 10 hours each day and then have lecture 2 days per week. It sounds better than I was thinking as far as time. Can you tell me any idea on what kind of GPA and points that you saw accepted into the program? I am at 3.6 pre-req GPA and 156 points. Is that competitive?

I don't remember the point scale, but if you don't have a CNA license that would be a big help. The first time I applied I got turned down, and my GPA was about the same as yours.
