I'm having a little trouble with the grammar, all else aside. Once I "seen"... Once I saw... just sayin.

I just got hired at Shands in Gainesville in mid December 2010. I am a new ADN grad (Aug. 2009), in my 2nd semester BSN, with no prior experience. Shands in Gainesville is one of the few hospitals that will hire new grads, you just have to be really persistent. Most hospitals in the NE FL area won't even look at you without experience, or at least a BSN. Good luck!!

I have lived in St. Augustine for the last 18 years and have never evacuated. If you're in alachua cty. you're in the middle of the state and should be fine. The worst would probably be losing power and dealing with lots of rain and possible flooding in certain areas. So you definitely need supplies, and being friendly with the neighbors certainly doesn't hurt! You have lots of warning with hurricanes, unlike earthquakes and tornadoes so you have plenty of time to take care of yourself. Just be smart and use common sense. And there will be tons of information on all the airwaves as to what to do. :chair:

I would love to know what that pay scale looks like 3 years later. I am a new grad (in NE FL) so this may seem like a dumb question, but if you just call HR at each hospital will they tell you these figures? Some have vague references on their websitesas to the pay. Just wondering.

I don't know what their pay is but since August 2009 they will only hire BSN's.

I actually just graduated in August 2009. I think it is so hard to be objective about teachers. What makes a student think a teacher is good or bad? Is it their knowledge or (or lack of) or teaching ability (or lack of) or meanness or niceness? I think all programs have a nurse Ratched on board and all have some teachers everyone loves. Also I only attended on the OP campus and Palatka has some different teachers and I think they will be starting an additional program on the St. Augustine campus w/in a year or so and who knows who will be teaching there. Also I have nothing to compare it to. It's the only one I've ever been to! Whatever these teachers did or not do to support my education, I made it my personal goal to pass every semester and to pass nclex on the 1st try, which I did. Did I like some teachers better than others? Yes. I picked SJRCC because it was the most convenient for me at the time and now I have my RN and it's done. What school does is prepare you to take and pass nclex and start out as a safe nurse. How you really learn to be a nurse is to start working as a nurse. Don't know if this helps or not but best of luck to you.

Not great. Some have gotten jobs at Shands in Lake City (ER) and Gainesville (peds), some at florida hospital in Bunnell. Flagler now requires a bsn to hire. I am not looking yet. I'm also a professional photographer and am back into that for right now. I am still in school completing my prereqs to go to UCF online bsn program as soon as possible too so, I'm working on all that and waiting until the job market gets a little better w/in the coming year. There are jobs, it might not be someones top pick, but you gotta start somewhere!

Graduated SJRCC nursing august 2009, passed nclex oct. 13!!! :yeah: Out of the 20 or so of us that have taken nclex so far only 2 have failed. Nice to be really, really done. Good luck to all of you and one word of advice, stick together and have each others back. It is the only way you will make it thru. You have to work together. This schooling may be the hardest thing you've ever done and you need lots of support from each other. I had an awesome class that I went thru the program with, so I was very lucky. Definitely friends for life with many. Best of luck, stay positive and share the love... you can do it!!

I don't remember, I started in Jan of 2008. We did have our orientation on Nov. 13 2007 so I know I was notified before that. There is a lot of stuff you have to do once you are accepted and before school starts like cpr, fingerprints, vaccines, background check, physical, etc. so you do need some time to get all of that done. They will let you know one way or the other so you are not left hanging. Hope this helps and good luck!

You should absolutely go for it. If anything it would be to your advantage being male. I am 53 (female) and just graduated nursing school. We had guys in my class and in all of the classes before and after mine. There is a guy who works at a local hospital who is in his early 60s. He became a nurse 6 years ago after a 30 year career as a truck driver! Go for it!! :wink2:

Oh also, they don't have a night/evening program and currently they only have nursing on the Orange Park and Palatka campus, not on the St. Augustine campus.

Yes they do require nutrition but a bachelor program would also require it or something like it. we just graduated on the 12th of august and I think a few students have gotten jobs. I am not looking yet, we just received the OK to register for the nclex yesterday. But jobs are definitely another story for all new grads.

I just graduated from SJRCC in August. They don't require Coll Alg or Chem - yet. Chem will be a requirement starting August 2010 and they said they will be requiring coll alg. at some point in the future. I too have such a hard time with coll alg. but you have to have it plus chem anyway to get into a bachelors program. And by the looks of things that is the way the profession is going. Flagler Hospital recently decided to only hire BSNs. They are a magnet hospital so that has something to do with it. Nonetheless nursing school is very hard. This is my fourth time in college and this is the hardest training I have ever done by far. By the way, the spring graduating class had a 100% nclex passing rate at the time of my graduation so the school must be doing something right. Here is a link to the program. Summer A is a little rough. 7 weeks and 4 days a week. My teacher is cool though and I will probably come out with a B. My last prereq. before nursing program. yay! I did get a little freaked when my school just announced that if you take micro twice and fail it both times you are no longer able to apply for the nursing program!!! Talk about tough love! I would say it's been the toughest class yet but anything is possible when you're committed! Hang in there and believe in yourself. Did I mention I am 51 and this is my 4th time back in school?! Never too late. Just go for it.
