Single mother needs advise

Published

Im a 45 yr old single mother of three pre-teens. I must work full time in order to support my family and do not have anyone to assist with finances. All of my pre-reqs for the LVN program are completed and I am currently enrolled in the CNA program. The problem I am having is trying to figure out how this will work. I was told that I could work at a LTC facility at night while attending the LVN program during the day. Yet when I try to put the hours needed for classes and the 40 hours of a job on paper, I do not see how it will work. The LVN classes are held from 7-5 m-f. So how will I be able to work full-time and still be able to attend school. Friends have said I could work 6pm-6am, but would not get any sleep. There has to be others who have crossed this same bridge. Can anyone lend some advise who has traveld down this road? I need all the help I can get. I dont want to change my major, I want to be a Nurse but Im starting to feel its unatainable for me.

I'm not a parent so honestly I have no idea what you're going through but I just want to say that there has to be a way!

You've come a long way so don't give up now! Talk with your school and place of employment about your predicament. See if they would be willing to work with your schedule.

Perhaps you could take just 1 or 2 classes at a time. It may take longer to reach your goal but it would be doable. I've known people that did this. =)

Work something out. Just don't give up on your dream! =)

My mom whose single went back to school in her 40's and obtained her B.A. She had two small kids. 7 and 8 I think me and my sister were. If she can do you can too! Just don't give up!

Good luck and God bless!

Single mom here of a 3 year old. I too am also just completing my CNA. What I am doing is looking at LTC places that will allow me to work a 12 shift on Thur night, Friday nigh and Saturday night. Most school in my area the RN/LVN program is 3 days clinical, 2 days class room. Most clinical days are usually 7am-3pm. Class days are 8am-5. No sat, sun. So if you have clinical on Wed, Thur, fri (Which i have fount to be the case with the LVN programs in my area) you leave clinical on 3pm on Thurs go right to work get off at 3am fri morning...sleep for 3 hours, off clinical on Fri right to work...off work 3am, sleep all day saturday until work at 3pm...off sunday morning....sleep all day sunday until Monday class...Thats my plan. Unless I can find a 16 hour Sat/Sun CNA shift which I highly doubt.

Still not much sleep, but thats my plan...

Hi, I'm also a single mom. Do any of the hospitals or nursing homes in your city have weekend option positions? I know students that work 16 hrs on Saturday and Sunday so M - F is free for classes. I don't know if that's an option for you or not. I wish you the best. Keep moving forward! :)

If you worked a 6-6 schedule, you would only work 3 days a week. You could schedule two of them on the weekend. After I get my CNA, I hope to get a schedule like this since I work full-time anyway. Three 12's would cut down on traveling time if nothing else.

I would try to work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night if you can, depending on when your clinicals are. We aren't allowed to work nights the night before clinicals.
