a sign of intellegence

We had our last review before final last night and I asked the lecturer if they could give us a suggestion as to what systems we will cover next semester. She asked why and I (very honestly) answered that it has been two years since my A&P classes and I feel I could benefit from reviewing these systems and maybe reading my pathphys book over the break ... when I spoke to the team leader earlier in the week she said she thought that was a great idea and "showed initiative and a desire to learn" but that I had to ask this specific lecturer ... well I was most surprised when the lecturer turned and said "It is a sign of intelligence if you can cover the material in the specified time frame, any idiot can take a course over months and do just fine". I clarified I was not asking for the nursing chapters to preread just the systems so I can make sure I am firm on the assumed knowledge prior to starting class - she rambled off the systems very rapidly, tossed her head and said "I jut can't believe this!". Our school had a test this week (a lecture test) where

I think it is great that you want to get a head start on your anatomy review.....Honestly Patho is my biggest issue, cause like you I had not had it for a while. I think you instructors comments were uncalled for. If they don't want you guys to know your topics then they could have said that without being so unprofessional....I don't think it is appropriate for an instructor to ever use the word "idiot" ever.....So with that said, I guess maybe ask some of the students in the class before you what they went over that semester...some things might have changed, but unless the whole curriculum has changed that is doubtful....Best wishes....

Wow - that sucks.

The way I'm understanding it, is that you weren't asking for specific material, you were asking for systems.... to refresh. WHY would that be such a bad thing?!?

Do they have instructor evaluations to be completed at the end of the semester? I'd write something then.

Keep asking about things you don't know ... even if it annoys her. It's YOUR education that you are paying for. I just cannot believe she would react that way since there are far too many people that slack. You'd think she'd be happy about someone taking the initiative to refamiliarize themselves.

Good luck!

Well I guess I'm just not that intelligent :)

I do everything I can to get a jump-start on my reading for the term. I've done this all through my pre-reqs and will do it over winter term before my second term of NS as well. I generally contact the Prof either via e-mail or in their office and find out what the reading assignments are for the first week or so. I've never had anything but a posative reaction to this request.

One thing about this board, it makes me more thankful for my NS everytime I read it. Sorry you're having these troubles OP.

well I was most surprised when the lecturer turned and said "It is a sign of intelligence if you can cover the material in the specified time frame, any idiot can take a course over months and do just fine".

Sounds like the lecturer is more concerned with grade deflation than learning of the students - it's a really sad reflection on her. It may be a sign of intelligence to be able to cover the material in the specified time frame (perhaps not the most important, but a sign, sure) but that's a separate issue. In fact, I would argue that a more important part of intelligence is figuring out how you learn best and pursuing that route.

I Know I am going to be going over A&P and reading ahead in my fundamentals book over the break, so I suppose that I am not that intelligent either.
