once you are inducted into stt, you are always a member. to be considered "active" you must keep up with your dues. active membership allows you to receive the publications, access resources on the website, and list it on your resume.
here is an excerpt from their membership faqs...
i cannot afford to renew my membership right now. what will happen to my membership?
you will become an inactive member of sigma theta tau international and will no longer receive the member benefits and publications. when you are able to become an active member again, simply renew your membership online membership renewal or call headquarters at 888.634.7575 (us/canada toll free) or +317.634.8171 (direct) and we can send you a membership renewal form. members can also apply for financial assistance with membership dues through the edith anderson membership subsidy fund.
i have become disabled. does sigma theta tau international have a special membership category for this?
members who become disabled, either temporarily or permanently, may request the "retired" membership status and pay one half of the renewal fees as they renew their membership for each year that they remain disabled. members may also apply for financial assistance with membership dues through the edith anderson membership subsidy fund.
I just received my renewal in the mail. I will NOT be sending any money to them. I originally joined because of some of the "benefits" that they list on their website. I tried to use the career assistance program and never received any help.
I believe in supporting organizations that support nursing. I think my money would be better spent joining a different organization.
As I was approaching graduation I started to receive invitations from my state's nursing association. I asked around with the other nurses and found out that every one of them said there was no benefit to joining. One of them put it this way, "What has the ____ ever done for me?" I used the $350 they wanted from me for something else. I see this organization to be the same way. Only exception would be if one belonged to a very active chapter, otherwise put your money into something practical.

Good afternoon everyone! :) Had a quick question. I got in to Sigma last year. I paid the dues. Well Sigma wants me to now renew my membership. I really do not have the $100 right now and my school's chapter did NOTHING this last year with Sigma. Nothing. So I don't feel compelled to renew right now. Quick question... once you are a member, are you always a member?? OR do you have to pay dues and renew to stay a member?
Thanks very much! Epona
