okay i've been here at this hospital now, well aug. 3rd will be 1 year. have had some stupid run- ins with the director on my floor, have posted here about them before. our floor has not had a manager in over a year. we just recently got one a week ago. to make a long story shorter i signed up for an acls class and didn't show up b/c i was exausted i woke up with a migraine and i was not about to go anywhere. i have called and cancelled in the past and not had my name taken off the list, so i thought, why bother calling. (anyway people do it all of the time, and no one says anything) well the next day, the new manager came up to me and told me that i possibly took the space someone else wanted, and how that's almost like not showing up for a work day b/c you get paid to take the class, and how in some facilities you could get written up and how next time i needed to call' and that it's a special class and space is limited. so i explained to her why i didn't call, and she said well that happened because you didn't have a manager and now you do. i feel like this was total bull****, instigated by the director that picks on me, what do you think? i'd like to add that most 30% of the people that work on my floor are not acls certified. it just makes me not even want to sign up anymore.

No show without a call is never good, no matter what the excuse, you will always look unprofessional. You have a new manager now and it sounds like getting on well with this new manager can help smooth things with the director. You might be surprised! Just my opinion! Good luck.

you should have called in sick. It doesn't really matter who is certified and who isn't or that other people don't bother to call. You should always do the right thing. On my floor you have to be ACLS certified or you cant work there. Its always a nice thing to have, especially if its free. Good luck to you.

i agree with the above poster, when you do not call in sick you are behaving unprofessionally. also try not to focus on or make excuses based upon the actions of other people. doing so shows a lack of emotional maturity on your part. besides, if you are correct that your manager actually does not like you, then being a no-show to the class gives your manager fuel for a fire (do not forget about evaluations)! therefore, it always behooves you to do the right thing for the right reason no matter the situation at work.:twocents:

Doesn't make it right, though. You should have called.

ACLS is not as bad a class as it used to be ... being certified looks good on a resume. :) You should sign up again, if they allow you to.

hi,

as a future nursing student we tend to read these posts and look to new grads as mentors reporting their steps to us. i think this is not a good example. :o i am not even a nurse yet and can tell you that a no call no show is unprofessional and inconsiderate regardless of who is in charge. as a new grad with less than one year of experience i would think you of all people should go above and beyond to learn as much as possible. acls is a pricy class that many people would claw and kill to take for free. it runs about $250 in my state. i think you have developed some bad habits from the senior nurses and i would recommend that you start diminishing those habits because they may hinder you in your career. especially by u being a new nurse!!!! something 2 think about ;)

I paid out of pocket for both ACLS and PALS. I would jump at a chance to get anything paid for by the employer. At least you now know where this new manager stands on things. She is going to make sure it is apparent that she is getting things under control. I would do everything to stay out of her line of sight in the future.

Messed up yes. Is it the end of the world , no. Just learn from the situation and try to be a better nurse, a better person. I know we all have had our share of mistakes...I know I have!;)

The best thing about this is your willingness to admit your mistake. That means you will learn from this and move on. Believe me, I have made many mistakes myself, and as long as we don't keep making the same ones over and over....well that's progress! Good luck to you. ACLS is a great thing to have and if you study real well, it's not that hard.
