What does everyone consider to be excessive sick leave. If a Nurse has beetween 10-14 sick days a year for a full time nurse 40 hours per week is that excessive? Very interested in your opinions. We until recently had 8 paid sick leave days per year. It has just increased to 10.

We usually get a verbal job discussion if we miss 10% of our scheduled hours for the quarter. They tend to be fairly leanient with it if it isnt habitual.

:sniff:

Our time off is lumped together in "Paid Time Off"; this includes vacation, holidays, sick days, etc. You accrue time dependent on your hours worked and length of service to the hospital.

The problem is that you are allowed only 3 unscheduled absences a year before you are reprimanded verbally. After 4, you are given a written warning, and if you are sick 5 times in a year, you are TERMINATED! .

That doesn't give much leeway for you to be sick, have a sick child or family member within one year. So I do not like this system.

As long as you have approved scheduled time off, there isn't a problem. But how often do you plan to be sick? Not many people have ESP!!!

Sheeeeeesh, Wildwood... that really does stink ! :o

Our PTOs are accrued the same way, but we don't have that silly "unscheduled absences" stipulation.

Kinda hard to know when you or your child will be sick, huh?

What's the matter with these ppl, anyway? These types of "rules" are what make nurses feel so much less than "professional". Truly sad.

At our hospital - its on a case by case basis for discipline. However, when you miss a lot or are late too much, its reported. We have PTO plus sick days.

We accrue PTO but it accrues very slowly. If we miss anytime and dont have the PTO to cover it we have to make it up. We do not get sick days. Given the fact that we work with sick people you would think they would realize we are bound to get ill more than the average person. I think it is pathetic that we are actually encouraged to come in sick and spread it around. I wear the masks which only serves to make me sicker by the end of the shift. I think it SUCKs the way we are treated.

Right after I went out on disability the hospital totally revised the sick/vacation (PTO) time to include a case manager for every time you were out. I never returned so I can't say how it worked.
