Showing up in person without an interview

Published

Hello All,

I am a new LVN and I have applied online to over 20 jobs over the last 3 weeks and have heard nothing. All of my applications say pending or being reviewed by HR.

What do you think of the idea of me walking in with my resume and cover letter and asking to speak to the Department Managers of the jobs that I have applied for, without an appointment?

I am thinking of doing it tomorrow, but want advice as to if this is a good or bad idea.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

I think it's a great idea. Good luck!!!

I admire your energy and motivation, but this may backfire on you for a couple of reasons.

Due to all the Federal regulations that surround the hiring process, most organizations have very clear hiring processes which require all applicants to be screened before going any further. HR is required to track the demographics of all applicants. They also have to establish eligibility for hire - which means some background screening. All this information has to be maintained in order to respond to various reporting requirements as well as to defend themselves from potential liability. For example, an applicant that is in a Federally 'protected' group could claim that he was not hired because of discrimination... "they didn't hire me because I am over 50". So the organization would have to pull all this data together to defend themselves.

The second reason... managers are very busy people. They may not take kindly to someone coming in without an appointment - interrupting their schedule - and expecting to be interviewed. They are likely to see this behavior as disrespectful, and feel that you are asking for special treatment. This would be a VERY wrong move if you want to be hired.

My manager would not be impressed. She is very busy and with no appointment you would just tick her off and she wouldn't give you a chance. She would probaby see it as trying to skip the normal process.

I have never had a problem with going in person to apply for work. However, I go to the personnel department and ask. They have me fill out an application and sometimes I am immediately interviewed, other times I am given an appointment to come back for an interview. Most of the time I am hired on the spot. Other times, it takes a few days. I go with all of my employment documents and dressed to interview. This method almost always works. Applying online has never produced a response at all.

I am happy to report that today I went in cold to 7 of the places that I applied to online.. and I met with 6 of the department managers..1 was out sick so I met her assistant.. What a huge weight off my shoulders.. I am so happy that I went with the majority of go do it advice. I got good feedback from all of them. I am doing the same thing tomorrow at 3 more places.

To every person who is looking for work..keep your head up and go out and get what is yours.. BTW.. I live in Northern California, the bay area..and all the managers said they were impressed with my coming in with my paperwork and to meet them instead of waiting on HR..

Good Luck all.. I'll keep you posted on employment..
