The current climate in the UK and the job situation has now prompted me to consider moving to the USA. I know I said I would never do it, but no jobs and a possible looming redundancy have made me re-consider.

So I'm curious. What made you want to leave the uk, why did you go, and if you had your time over again - would you do it?

I think that it might take too long for me to sort out coming to the states before I get redundancy notice... especially if I wade through the paperwork alone. I wonder which is quickest, USA or Australia?

OMG Ogp have put up their prices then, $24000 if you break contract that is outrageous.

Unfortunatly I cannot say everything I feel about OGP on here I may be sued for liable. If you can get out now do so. If not then welcome aboard you'll be in same boat as quite a lot of us!!! They are great as long as you dont need them at any point once getting to the USA. Read your contract-it is not wehat OGP can do for you it is what You can do for OGP. There is no get out clause for the nurses but plenty for OGP.

I would like to say plenty about OGP too, but I won't. I have been in the USA for 2 and a half years and I miss the NHS! Nursing in America sucks. I am overworked to the point of exhaustion, no support, and more and more things are pushed on to me and we're expected to just cope. If you complain you are really looked down upon and could be fired if you don't do what you're told. We're expected to take patients with hemodialysis with only a couple of hours training. The first patient they tried it with on our unit got a blood clot and died and who takes the blame? The nurse of course! Now I have hurt my back and am off sick. I only had 3 sick days saved up so now I am without pay and the insurance wouldn't pay for my MRI scan. Sometimes I just wish I was in England. I can't get on with Americans....they're so different. There's no sense of humour or camaraderie as there was back home. Not everything is as exciting as it looks from afar. Right now I'd give anything for a decent cup of tea and a Marks and Spark's sandwich!

Well at present in wales there is a 18 mth waiting list to see an orthopeadic consultant and a further 18 mth wait for MRI. Also the NHS is in fianical difficulties so in lots of hospitals there is a freeze on vacant nurses post and no money for bank or agency so wards and nurses are having to cope very short staff- loads of staff are still not on the new pay scale and those who are have not recieved there back pay and many are still waiting for the pay rise 2.5 % add to this that there are virtually no NHS dentists left o yes and patients are still dying on trolles in corridors waiting for beds.

FYI, there are a few other UK'ers coming to Arizona that we've been helping in the Arizona Nurses forum :)

The climate out here is so crazy, the southwestern US is growing at such a rate that you can still afford GREAT housing (4/2 2k sqft house for under 1000/month), there are great jobs, with great pay (avg RN seems to make about 26/hr out here - travel nurses make much more), and much more :)

We only get rain a few days a year, but ... well... we only get rain a few days a year - there's never been a better place to own a convertible ;)

If we can be of any help, stop by the AZ forum, we're a chatty bunch :)

Dear Rocknurse

It sounds like you are homesick! What you feel is felt by every immigrant living in a foreign country, including me living in the UK.

Just remember.... you do have a choice and that makes you richer that 90% of humanity. You can decide where to live and work!

All the best

Remember you can only access quick medical care here if you have good insurance and if you have got some money behind you. No health care is free in the US you pay to see the dr regardless of if you have health insurance or not, plus they (the insurance companies) will only pay towards big medical expences not all of it. You may be shocked by a big bill which will be your responsibility and they want payment asap, they do offer terms. UK nurses please be aware you will need money put away for the just in case!!!!! Dr's surgerys charge up to $100 per visit to the pt, this is called your co-pay a bit like car insurance has a deductable.

So be prepared to pay.

Believe life life here in the US is not a bed of roses, same sh** as back home only different country. Come here enjoy life but it is not better than UK, it is different.

Dental care is different and just as expensive as the UK some insurance policies do not offer coverage.

It took 11 weeks to have an xray of hip and pelvis to be done post MVA/RTA
