Should RN keep her previous LPN license?

Published

So I recently graduated from LPN-RN bridge program and passed NCLEX for RN's. My LPN license is expiring soon. Should I still keep it if I am an RN now?? Thanks!

First, verify that the state you are licensed in allows this. Some states do not. Also, should you take a job as an LPN, you will be held to the standards of the RN license since that is your highest level of licensure.

I had to renew my Lpn license shortly before I got my rn license so I've have both for almost two years. I am not renewing my Lpn license next month though. No point since I use my rn license now.

Think of it this way: it's like a having a driver's license in 2 different states. Generally not allowed; you are not allowed to keep a "back-up license" should one become encumbered in any way.

I really don't get how this would work. Do you have a separate number for the LPN license? For EMS, they always voided the previous level even if the number didn't change.
