Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi there!!

My name is Briana and i am a senior in high school. Next year i will definently (sp??) be going to college but im not sure what i want my major to be!! Thats where i need help!! I have been looking on different websites and trying to decide on a major. I have always originally liked journalism and writing but im not so sure i want to do that anymore. Then i came across this website explaining nursing and it looked really interesting!! If i were to become a nurse in the future i would want to be a pediatric nurse helping children because i get along great with kids and i love helping others!! but the only problem is i am a little squimish. I dont like bodily fluids getting on me or bad smells and things of that sort. lol. but i think i might be able to get over it and not be so selfish and help others. But please!! Advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!!

-Briana

P.S. sorry if i put this post in the wrong category im new to the site and didnt know where to put it :)

P.S.S also i had a question. Say i dont get over my squimishness lol do you think i could still do the job??

why not take a placement survey at the local college, or perhaps your high school offers one, that helps direct you to the type of career that would be suited to your likes and talents. Also, take that first year of college and develop your likes. Many go in with the idea of one thing, then decide it isn't for them, and switch to another major anyway. Good luck on whatever you decide

Also see if through your high school or local hospital, a shadowing day is offered. They do this where I live. Its a great way to follow a nurse around for a day and see if what they do interests you. :D

Good Luck.

I agree with Crux1024, I was a little torn about what I wanted to do when I was first filling out college apps and then I shadowed my aunt who is an RN and just knew that that was what I wanted to do. It helps to be exposed to the different fields so you can really get a feel for what they are all about!

You will definitely have to deal with many bodily fluids and bad smells though! That is basically a means of weeding people out of the nursing program (at my school anyway). I wasn't necessarily ever squeamish with that kind of stuff, but I'll admit I was grossed out by certain things...however, being around it all the time and being forced to deal with it in clinicals helps you get over that very quickly!

Nursing is a tough major and profession, but I find it to be very rewarding and at the end of the day, very worth it. I hope this helped a bit, good luck with your decision! :)

thanks everyone for your responses!! I am really taking everything into consideration!! :)

Take an anatomy class at your college and see how you feel. At my school we had to disect things like sheep brains, cats, eye balls ect. Some schools do cadavars. I think if you can get past that smell and fluids then you will probably be fine in nursing. Otherwise if you don't like it and drop the class then you know that nursing probably won't be for you. Good Luck!----Kelli

I would DEFINITELY see if your local hospital will let you shadow a pediatric nurse for a day!! It will show you what nursing is really like. Good luck!!
