Should I take Chem Lab?

Published

So I have been avoiding this for 3 semesters, but I need to take an extra Intro to Organic & Biochemistry class for the BSN program I'm interested in. What I'm trying to decide is whether to take the lab too. It's not required, but I've always taken the lab with courses and found it benefial to my understanding of the topic. So should I take the lab?

Personally, I took three terms of chemistry and hated every single moment of it, but never spoke with another student who didn't think the lab was the most helpful part of the class. Seems to tie it together. Good luck!

I took a Chem. similar to what you're taking without the lab and made an A. Personally, I'm lazy and wouldn't take it because of the extra work.

Weetzie, you've found one. Labs in the classes I've taken were not the best part of the course. The booklearning was. That's just me.

I tend to do well in the math/sciences. If you're one of those, don't waste your time. But if you know Chem. will be a struggle, then the lab might indeed help tie it together and help.

Chemistry was such a dread for me. Don't ask me why but it was :chuckle

Surprisingly, I was excited with the Lab portion. It was more visual to me and loved to perform experiments. We even made soap and cheese. It was fun and it truly helped me understand the lecture portion.

Good luck :)

I have found many colleges require a lab. I'd take it just in case you decide later on to switch schools.

If there's "NO WAY" you'd change your mind, then I wouldn't bother.

(However, for your sake, I hope your school doesn't make a chem lab mandatory in the next couple of years! It would be harder going back in couple of years to take a lab from a class you haven't had in a long time!)

Good luck either way! :)

I HATE Chemistry labs. In my school the labs dont follow the class so they dont help just create more hassle. If yours does follow the class and it does help you learn the material i would take it but if it doesnt just avoid the hassle.

I've decided to take the lab. Thanks for everyone's response.

The more I think about it has been years since I've taken chemistry. So does anyone have any reccomendations for a review book of basic chemistry?

I would get the AP Chemistry book. It is designed for students taking the AP test but it has a great basic review of all aspects of chemistry along with good questions that you can answer and explanations of the right answers to help you learn it. Either that or a Petersen's Handbook for Basic Chemistry that is a good brand to buy too.
