All the nursing programs I have looked into have psych as a pre-req or a class you take once admitted to the nursing program (if you've taken it most will transfer that class and give you the credits). But all the schools also mention that the class grade needs to be a C+ or better in order to use it. I'd re-take psych, get that A you said you deserve, and that higher grade will replace that D and help up your GPA.
As competitive as getting into nursing school is, you want to show your best face. A D is like a big ol nasty pimple on that best face. Go for the A!
Don't retake it - save some money and time. How? CLEP it.
Find out if your school takes CLEP credits and if so, take the CLEP exam and be done with it.
Wait..do you know what CLEP is? The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) is a way to take 1 examination for a course and receive credit for it.
Since you've already taken the course and believe you should have received an A, you should have no problem with doing well on the exam.
Need more info: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html
CLEP has saved many of people..check out the boards on here. But before you do ANYTHING, find out if your school will accept the CLEP credits because if they don't...then you'll have no choice BUT to retake the course. But, many schools do and it's worth checking out.
Good luck!
Definitely check and see if a D is good enough to get you accepted into your program. I am taking Psych now and need a B- or better for consideration (as well as A&P I and English I where I need a B- as well).
You should retake it, if money isn't an issue, and bring your GPA up. It is MUCH easier to bring it down..than back up. Just do it!!

Hello all this is my first post. I just completed my first semester and got a D in pyschology. Long story short i did not deserve it and i can easily receive an A if i retook it. My question is should i bother? My GPA is currently 2.75 with that horrid D, but remember that i only just began my 2nd semester so i have a good amount of time to bring it back up.
