Shortage of Lasix

Just found out from our pharmacist that Lasix is in short supply. Evidently a couple of the companies that made Lasix or the generic has stopped producing the med because it is not profitable. :eek: :eek: Here is the link: http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/shortages/#current

Last year it was Sublimaze, Narcan, Compazine, and DT vaccine. Wonder what will be next?

We were subsituting Demadex for the Lasix, but we have used up that supply, so now we are using Bumex. Sure hope that doesn't run out!! :eek:

I thought the narcan/compazine shortage was just at out hospital because they weren't paying their bills. Guess I was wrong.

Hmmm...Narcan, dT, Compazine, IV Benadryl...now Lasix?

Judging from how often we use it in the ER for our CHFrs who come in with lungs resembling washing machines, this could become yet another healthcare goat rodeo...

Have you found that Demedex/Bumex work as well as Lasix?

Oh, I forgot about the IV Benadryl shortage. I really haven't seen any difference between Lasix and Bumex/Demadex. I know the Bumex comes in vials of 4cc/1mg so there is usually more volume to push. And the Demadex comes is glass ampules that you have to break which is a real pain in the butt. I am just use to pulling up Lasix I guess. Pharmaceutical companies are greedy? I never noticed! LOL!!

It's always something. I remember a couple of years ago we were all in a panic over Solumedrol shortages.

There is also an MMR shortage upcoming. And Decadron is in big demand...it came from the UK and was made with a beef derivitive so it was banned here.

We also have a shortage of the multivits that go in our HAL? Okay..now...how can you have a shortage of freaking vitamins!

Now lasix? Greedy pharmacuetical companies (sp) It is no wonder people go elsewhere for meds.

Just like gasoline. price goes high enough to make more money than necessary, there will be plenty to go around. Scr** the sick and affirmed. We want PROFITS .

When I used to do cardiac nursing, I found that bumex works very well. It doesn't work quite as quickly as Lasix, I don't think, but the end result is the same. Plus, it is a potassium-sparing diuretic.;)
