Shenandoah University Accelerated BSN

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi everyone!

So i just got accepted to Shenandoah University's accelerated BSN program and I am very excited! I am from California so Virginia is a long way away but I am looking to live in another state for a year :)

I was wondering if anyone else got in to SU and what their thoughts on the program were? I have heard mixed reviews; however there is a 95% pass rate and it is actually more reasonably priced than other schools I have been looking at so it is one of my top options!

Would love to hear more if you are considering SU as well!

Thanks!

I'm a little late to the party, but I was recently accepted to the ABSN program for Fall 2013. My 1st degree GPA was 2.8 but my prerequisite gpa is 4.0 and I score a 97% (99% tile) on the TEAS. I sent my initital application in late November, fall grades were sent mid-December, and I got a verbal acceptance in early January. My acceptance letter came in February. (provisional - based on satisfactory completion of all pre-reqs)

Hello everyone, I was accepted for fall 2013, I'm soo excited!!! I got a verbal admission and I will be getting the packet in the mail soon. I'm from nc and I'll be attending at the Winchester campus cause I'm hoping to get on campus housing. Plus I was told its less expensive to live there instead of leesburg if you are coming from out of state.

Hey there, does anyone know how many are admitted for each cohort?

I have no idea. Are you waiting to hear back? And what campus are you going to attend?

Hey elise, I've applied to the fall cohort (initially for Leesburg, but switched to Winchester). I still have a few prereqs to complete and two more at the beginning of summer. My transfer advisor had urged me to finish everything by the beginning of July. Just curious to see how many people will be joining for the fall :)

It honestly depends. My cohort started with around 30 people but the one before mine had about 60. Not sure how it is at the Winchester campus however.

Also, I wanted to let people know a few things that differed from the admission packet in terms of price. First, the expected $1100 for books for the program is way low! I spent about that for the first semester, and that's with using other book sources than the school bookstore to get the cheapest price. Not sure what the prices will look like for the second semester as they haven't given us a book list yet, but be prepared. I have heard that if you rent books it is much cheaper but it seems like very few people use that option in case they need the books for later.

Second, you don't need scrubs for the first semester (at least at Leesburg)! The first clinical is Mental Health and they require you to dress business casual for that as no one on the psych units wear scrubs. If you're feeling overwhelmed by how expensive everything is, it might help knowing that you don't need to spend more on scrubs at first. You do, however, need a lab coat for labs.

Also, financial aid can be a pain. If you can, try to get all that sorted out as soon as possible. Things were a bit delayed, which messed up a lot of things. Both my roommate and I lost out on a grant because financial aid did not send out all the information necessary for it. Hopefully for the fall start they will be more organized but it was terrible for the spring. If you do have to call them, make sure to request they call you back otherwise they won't.

Despite those few frustrating things, doing this program is honestly so much fun. If you truly want to be a nurse, it's definitely worth it. The classes are fascinating, if a bit challenging at times, and the professors are wonderful. If I think of anything else that might be helpful for incoming students, I'll write it down and feel free to ask questions. I might not be able to answer right away but I'll do my best. I know that would have helped me a lot :)

I sincerely appreciate you taking the time writing all of that out- it's very helpful! I'm curious to know how many clinical/lab hours are completed at SUs program. There's very little information on the school's page. I have heaps of other questions to ask, but I think I'm going to wait until this Saturday at the info session :cat:

Specializes in None.

Does anyone know what the pre-reqs are to the accelerated BSN program? I couldn't find them anywhere on the website. Any information would be great! Thanks! :-)

Hi All!

I'm going to be starting Shenandoah's 2nd degree program in Leesburg this Fall. Anyone else?

Rachel

nermface, were you able to get all your questions answered at the info session? If not, I might be able to help out a bit. Actually just came back again to give some advice from my roommate. For the first semester, if you have the time to search for the books that come in the bundle, do that as it will probably save money and the frustration of having bought books you will never use. It may also be worth waiting to get to class before buying some of them because I think of that bundle we used two books this semester and it doesn't seem like the others will be used any time soon. :(

As to havehope's question, I can't remember the pre-reqs. I tried finding them on the site again, figuring it might be easier since I searched it before but no luck. It seems like they're having issues with links right now but maybe you could try emailing one of the advisers there. I remember Karen O'Neil was very helpful in getting everything straight.

Here's what I was able to find (it also matches the informational sheet I received during a campus visit last year):

Human Anatomy & Physiology, I & II, with labs (8)

Introductory Microbiology with lab (4)

College Chemistry with lab (4)

Human Growth & Development (3)

Nutrition (3)

Statistics (3)

English Composition (3)

English Literature (3)

Introductory Sociology (3)

Philosophy, Religion or Ethics course (3)

Medical Terminology (1)

The information is buried under "Admissions>>Transfers". Scroll to the bottom of the page for the link to "Transfer Nursing Requirements". The page that follows lists info for all the nursing tracks. I'd post the link, but that's not allowed on this site.
