Shelton State '16 ADN

Published

I applied for the Fall 2016 nursing program and am currently waiting to get my letter in the mail. I'm applying with 185 points total. Any comments or advice? Anyone else applying?

I feel Shelton gives me more value for the money. It's cheaper and almost every nurse I've taken to in the Tuscaloosa area seems to think Shelton does a much better job at preparing you for the hands on skills and that UA does a better job at the paperwork aspects. I would much rather go into my first nursing job knowing how to perform hands on skills that Shelton will teach rather than being a master at paperwork. Plus, the classes are smaller and more intimate at Shelton. Im not too worried about the BSN since,at least in Tuscaloosa, hospitals don't care if you have an BSN or ADN and there is no increase in pay for having BSN. Plus, I plan on getting into the BSN to MSN program at UA anyway. Overall, Shelton fits me better.

I agree it is more bang for the buck. You will find, however, that with SOME nurses, they will flaunt their BSN. I have witnessed it many times: "Yeah, but they only went to a 2 year program." And I do agree that the nurses that come out of SSCC are better nurses right out of the gate--things might even out over time, but they are generally more ready to handle "working". This was my observation years ago when I was in a position to observe new hires.

Well I had friend that went to UA for her BSN in Nursing and she didnt do well. She said it was very stressful she didnt make it in the program there so she left UA and went to UWA and still didnt finish their program so she just went back to UA and completely changed her Major. I just think it is too much trying ro go straight through. I just plan on getting my BSN online may go through UAB to do that.

I currently work at the hospital and honestly Id like to know where they got the nurses because to me I still havent ran across a good one!

That's fine. Let them laugh. Hope they're laughing when their student loan bills come every month.

Did u all apply to any other schools ?

Did u all apply to any other schools ?

I have no choice but to do school in Tuscaloosa. I have carpool duties, so I have to have kid school and mom school in the same town.

My mom has had many medical issues so I've spent a ton of time in DCH and every single person I've talked to that works there says that they prefer Shelton nursing students over UA when it comes to jobs because Shelton students know more about the job requirements than UA students. At DCH, every nurse regardless of degree starts at $24 an hour, I think $27 if you work nights. I personally don't want to work at a hospital so that doesn't affect me, but like mentioned earlier, if people prefer Shelton and there's no pay difference, I'm not gonna waste my money right now. Haha

My friend got her letter today, anyone else??? Her last name is an E so if they do it alphabetically we may get it Monday if yours didn't come today

She get accepted ? And well yes my is at the end of the alphabet sooo mines maybe monday or tuesday!

Yeah she got in! And yeah mine is T so I figure I'd be at the end too haha

Wish I knew how many ppl applied an how many they are accepting? Ugh do u even know how many points they want you to have when you take the TEAS? Im worrying myself lol
