sharpening up before back to school...

Just wondering what those of you lucky ones (like me) are doing to get back in the mindset for school. I feel like I should be brushing up on my knowledge before I get thrown back into the wolves! I am working as a nurse tech this summer so I feel like my clinical skills have grown, but I fear my book smarts are a little rusty...

Me too! I am only working PT as a tech b/c I have another job, but I feel more comfortable in the hospital now. I feel like I am forgetting the book stuff too. I still have 33 more days of freedom, so I figured I should go through my fundies book or something.....

Sounds like you will be ready to be back!! To get back in the mindset, I am just trying to do all the research I can on what I need to do, what I will be studying, where I can get study aids and looking over a few A&P materials. It's going to be really weird as I have been out of school for 20 years but I know it will be interesting, at the very least!! I'm enjoying reading tips on how to "get organized" and what we might need for school, different study techniques and ideas on the allnurses boards in particular! It seems like such an awesome online community of support! Glad I found it!!

One thing I do is just pick up a good book. It gives you a chance to pick up your reading speed and not weigh you down with details.

I am reading some of the chapters in this semesters Nursing books and starting to memorize my drugs as well. Not cramming just reading. We do not start until August 31 so I have a whole nother month to relax and get ready...

Specializes in critical care; community health; psych.

Same here. The clinical skills are there from working so that's a plus. I've been in the books but not consistent about it. Of course reviewing lab values and using Saunders NCLEX Q&A to narrow down the weak areas. Our second day back, we will take the PreRN which will have a great bearing on whether we get to choose our preceptorship or go with what they give us. I want to be prepared.

Specializes in Med-Surg.

I still have two months and I'm not ready to be back in study mode. I'm still having fun doing other things with my family and friends!! Our school will mail out assignments in the next two weeks tho and then I'll start hitting the books again. In addition to what they assign I'm going to go through my NCLEX book, go over my assessment and med admin skills, and do a review of dose math. I also want to go back over other skills we learned last year (ie ng, catheters, colostomy etc...) Until I get that fat envelope from the school tho, I've still got myself officially on break!

I've been reading chapters for next semester and going over things I know will show their ugly head again this semester ( fluid and electrolyte ,for whatever reason this one just gets me on test everytime) values and IV Therapy. Even though I've been reading I'm still getting nervous about this semester it is my last (hopefully, lol)
