For those who applied to Sharps summer 2011 program

has anyone heard anything yet?

I didn't get an email confirmation the last round of applications in Nov., just a phone call from the recruiter for a phone interview. I think with 1500+ applications (probably even more now), some of us just fall through the cracks unfortunately. From what I heard, Memorial hired only internal applicants (those who had been working at the hospital throughout school) or people with extensive nursing experience.

wow with that many applicants I really think I don't have a chance......oh well.

Just a questions though......isn't this supposed to be a new grad program? If so, why did they only hire people with extensive nursing experience, doesn't seem to make sense to me.....

I'm realizing it's really useless to apply to this new grad programs, chances to be selected are really low......:crying2:

Good luck everyone!

It's definitely a good idea to apply for everything to get your name in the system and it's good interviewing experience if you get a call. I've been through two of these with interviews, but ultimately was told I didn't have enough experience or other applicants had more. With so much competition nowadays, these hospitals are looking for a commitment level beyond just a license, high GPA and a degree. They want you to have had some nursing assistant, volunteer experience, or nursing experience. I know of a couple of people hired at one of the Sharp facilities who had less than a year of med/surg actual RN experience or RN experience at a skilled nursing facility (one person I heard had 3 years med/surg exp, but happened to know the hiring manager). The bar has been raised significantly for new grads. I only realized this after the fact, but am trying to make up for it by volunteering and working at any RN position I can find even though it isn't acute experience. It's also definitely a "who you know" game too. People with connections are getting the jobs, sometime regardless of experience.

Did anyone else think it was strange that the first questions they asked on the application were about where you went to school? It seems to me they screen people out based on living in San Diego or not.

I also found their application system to be lacking. When you upload the cover letter, it disappears and it doesn't verify that the supplemental form went through on your profile. There's no way to check the status of your application, etc. I am a bit disappointed with how such a great hospital would handle their application process. I am applying to several other hospitals with much more efficient systems. But hopefully everything went through and we all have a fair chance.

Yes, Sharp is VERY different from Scripps or even Palomar. They tend to hire from within and like to see long term commitment. This of course is just from my own experience with both facilities.

Talked to a Sharp recruiter at my school today. She said they have about 1800 applicants. That's a very scary thought. What kinds of questions do they ask during the phone interview?

It's interesting how things change- when I graduated last year, from a school in SD, Scripps was only hiring internally, and Sharp was the one hiring internally and externally. Sounds like it has switched this year.

From what I was gathering from the recruiter, Sharp was trying to set a high standard for their interview process and the profession of nursing on a whole starting with the last round of the new grad program. They also specifically ask on the application if you are an employee or volunteer and if you went to school locally. The climate for new grads has definitely changed even in the past year. So much competition for very few positions.

Yes I agree, there's way too much competition!!!! There are very few openings and a large number of applicants, not a good combo.

I am all for setting a high standard for nursing, but seriously though it's becoming almost impossible to enter the profession. 1800+ people competing for 50 or 60 spots it's just crazy.

Well I know for a fact I'll get a rejection, since I have and ADN and didn't went to school in SD and never worked/volunteered for Sharp. If these are their selection criteria then they should have made their new grad program open to internal candidates only. Many hospitals are actually already doing that, they advertise their new grads programs but the spots are already given to their internal applicants..........

Can someone explain what you mean by internal candidates? If you are a new grad, how can you already work there? Do you mean people who are working as CNAs or volunteering at Sharp? I just don't know how you can really do that while you're in nursing school, especially if you don't live in San Diego. :-)

Yes people already working as CNA or unit secretary in the hospital. I live in Los Angeles and I know of at least two hospitals here that did exactly that. They both had a new grad program that started a few weeks ago, they had their application on their website and everything but I know that most of the positions where already filled with people working there. I know because some of my classmates got into the programs and didn't have to go through the application and selection process. So even if the say they have 50 spots, truth is they even have less than that.....not fair but that's they way it is......again in this market it's all about who you know not how good or qualified you are.....

Don't worry...they'll reject me too! I don't live in SD, nor did I volunteer at Sharp. And all of my answers to the questionnaire involved how I wanted to be an oncology nurse...when I applied to a med/surg position :)
