Has anyone worked at Shands ER? I currently live in Houston, thinking of moving to Jax to be close to family. What is the pay rate and pt. ratio in the ED?
Thanks for your time!

I gotta tell you this ED is crazy crazy crazy. Never worked in that particular dept, although I worked at Shands L&D, but just having to go down there to pick up a patient used to make me nervous.
Very large very busy. It has been featured on the TLC program a couple of times. Maybe you remember the guy with the knife all the way thru his skull and lived to talk about it? That was at Shands.
If you like dangerous adrenaline pumping situations, this is the place for you.
Me? I prefer to earn my paycheck in a less pressure filled environment.
Good Luck and God Bless you!

Did some online searching and came up with a little. Will ask some fellow travelers tonight and get more info and update this post later.
Shands_ Jacksonville 755 bed hospital with 100,000+ year ER visits. Depending on how big the ER physically is and how its staffed I will agree with the above posters that yes that would/could be crazy busy. That averages 275 pts day. Other things one would want to know is- do they hold pts? How do you hold pts- ie is there a seperate holding area in the ER? Do you have to start an MAR for held pts, if so who orders those meds?
As far as pay in FL it averages low vs the rest of the country. Their website doenst provide much infomatin but 'm sure if you call the HR dept you can get a range.

Golf course abound all over the place
I even played at Sawgrass, lovely course, and the 17th is always fun

Thanks for the info! I already work in a very busy ED. I work in a county hospital level 3. We have er holding-obs and I love it! Still curios what nurse to pt. ratio is. I don't think HR could tell me that.
Shands L&D is also nutso crazy. I learned more there in 6 months than in 6 years at other places. BUT: I used to have to go to the restroom for a few minutes just so I could sit down! Nonstop action. Nice unit, very up to date as far as surroundings and supplies. Inner city medicaid, residents in and out. You get the idea Im sure.

I started out in the NICU at Shands Jax. It was sooooo stressful, but i am now a travel nurse in CA with my young family. We still have our home out there. I went down to the ER a couple of times. It is very very big and very very busy. Just make sure that you like adrenaline pumping situations.
Lots of them. The hospital is not in a very good area of town. As a matter of fact, not a good area AT ALL. Lots of gun shot wounds, and attempted murders, etc... Alot of women come in with NO prenatal care whatsoever and their babies end up in the NICU. Good Luck

ER patient ratio is 6:1 on a good day. That's for your ICU holds. I haven't worked there but that's what I was told on my interview.
I recommend Baptist Downtown; busy but not crazy busy, level 3 trauma, affiliated with Wolfson Childrens Hosp, good place to work. I can tell you more if you like.
