Bkat
Has anyone taken this exam? I have been an ER nurse for 3 years and recently changed jobs. I had to take the BKAT test and did not pass! I felt so stupid, but a lot of the questions were what would you do first. Example: 16yr. old came in w/GSW. What would you do first: 1.start fluids 2.type & cross 3.call OR staff 4. can't remember but would not do it first In real life the 3 are done all at once! Any input would be great!

Ben Taub Hospital Emergency Room
Ben Taub is not just an ER it's a level 1 ER. Very busy place to work! I actually work in the sister hopital of Ben Taub. It seems a lot of RN's like it there. You have to be able to work fast and work under pressure!

Funniest injury you have ever seen.....
Over a span of 4 days we had 3 foriegn bodies. 1st one was a pt. with an apple up his rear, yes he fell on it. The 2nd was a pt. who for some odd reason pt his member into a gatorade bottle and when he couldn't remove it tried to cut the bottle off. He came into the ER and had to have the rest cut off! Needless to say he left without notice. The 3rd was a pt put a remote control up his rear. His reason was...I was up smoking crack all night and decided to put it up my .....

Latex Allergy
Thank you for the replies. I'm pretty miserable. I have swollen fingers that have split open in several spots, swollen lip that swells and my eyes are swollen and itch like crazy! The solumedrol has me pretty hazy feeling, can't seem to concentrate. I have to work the next 2 nights also. I definitely don't want to impact everyone else just because I have a latex allergy. I'm pretty sure where I work others won't be impacted. If this is an actual latex allergy I have already been told that I might have to change work places or jobs! I will let you all know when I find out! Tia

Latex Allergy
I may be allergic to latex! I have tried non-latex powder free gloves and it's not working. I had a full blood work up at the allergist yesterday. I have also been put on solumedrol pack, allegra, zyrtec, zantac, and doxipin. I also got 8mg decadron injection at the office yesterday. Do any of you have a latex allergy and if so how do u deal with it. Thank you, Tia ER-RN

What do your ER patients families say or do that irks you?
"I'm hungry" as soon as they get there. We tell patients that we don't feed people in the ER unless it's medically necessary. This drives me crazy! The ones with abd. pain 10/10 eating chips and drinking coke. This is when we inform the DR. that they are possibly FOS!:)
