Shabbos/Religious Observances

As I begin the applications process for nursing schools, I have one huuuuge concern - my religious obligations. I am not permitted to work/attend school, etc. from sunset Friday nights until an hour past sunset on Saturday nights because of the Jewish sabbath. I've heard that a lot of programs have 12hr clinicals on Saturdays...yikes! Has anyone "worked it out" with similar obligations?

I was raised Dutch Reformed, a Calivinistic sect similar to Prebyterianism (all right, almost indecipherable except for locality) and we said part of the Shema every SUnday.

This is such an interesting conversation, and I have learned so much in reading it.

I thought there was some controversy when those Ethiopian Jews wants to immigrate? Since they were Black people, wasn't there doubt about them? I remember reading about it.

One controversy was that Israel rescued them from the famine, in the 80's I believe, and didn't help the rest of the Africans starving there they only wanted to help Jews. Ture or untrue this was the perception of those events.

There might have been doubt because they'd been separated from the other Jews for so long.

Y'know, there are very few Jews in the world - about 12 million, I believe. That's largely because other groups often try to, you know, wipe them out. Wiped all all of European Jewry not so far back. Some are still trying. Yet they are always criticized for taking care of themselves and not everyone else.

I will never get it.

I actually heard someone say, "Yeah, their Holocaust. Like it was only them!"

Huh? Yes, others were killed, but not with the same glee and particular sadism as the Jewish prisoners. And when they tried to flee they were turned away, including from this country, and their ships turned around to certain death.

Never again.

Sorry. I get a little passionate about my chosen people. I feel a tremendous affinity for Judaism and the Jews. Maybe that 1/4 does it. I don't know.

Texasmommy, where in Tx do you live and where exactly are you planning to apply? I am a Jewish woman currently attending nursing school in the DFW area and I may be able to give you some specific tips on how to make sure you don't get a saturday rotation, depending on where you might be going.
