I don't think nurses are seen as "female, white, skinny whores" at all by the general public. What's wrong with being a skinny white female, by the way? Does that mean you're not a competent nurse?

I agree with OP. I also agree that there are more important issues out there, but it still does not take away from nurses being generalized as female, white, skinny, whores. This add does a disservice to the profession.

Thanks for daring to not side with the wave of indifference most of the first few responders have displayed. Find further reading (long but very well-written) for those interested in finding out why nurses should be concerned about these types of portrayals here:

1) I am a skinny, white female.

2) I am saying that nurses get generalized as such, when in fact nurses can be: Man or woman; White, black, yellow, purple, green, orange, etc; gay or straight; etc, etc, etc

3) I did not say anything related to competency, I said this is what nurses are generalized as being.

4) Read and comprehend before you pull out your flame thrower.

Of course it has nothing to do with your competence. But the more the more the stereotype is spread, the more people will get the impression that the nursing profession is not to be respected. See the link I posted above to clarify the issue. But again, sincere thanks to those of you who are indifferent to the issue for taking the time to say so. Every time you bump the thread, it gets in front of more eyeballs and the issue is at least being discussed. So everyone please feel free to chime in on this however you feel about it.

Op, I hear what you're saying; but I have to admit I enjoy a clever, well-thought out advertisement. Here's one from one of our local companies, one of a series flighted just before and during last year's FIFA world cup.

This is clever and funny, and although many women might find it offensive, I am not one of them. I thought it was a much bigger hoot (pun intended) than the groaner you showed us. :D

I agree it is an issue. I have seen it first hand on my military base and at my VA Medical Center. The men tend to react differently to the female nurses then they do male nurses. Yes they laugh about men being nurses but they do not call them sweety, honey, buttercup, shorty, etc. I am still a student and just a volunteer but I have seen the nurses get really upset because they feel women in health care are depicted a certain way and that translates into a lack of respect from patients. I am not sure how it is in the civilian sector but I am sure it happens there too. It is unfortunate.

"whore" never came to my mind when i saw the video. sexy does not = whore. i've met some "whores" in my day that were definitely not sexy. and nurses are not generalized as you had described. portrayed would be the correct term. nurses are sometimes portrayed with a sexy image.

Definition of Whore: A person considered sexually promiscuous. The image portrayed is that of a promiscuous woman, meant to entice men.

Definition Portrayed: To depict or describe in words.

Definition Generalized in relation to ethics:

Hasty generalization

Definition: Making assumptions about a whole group or range of cases based on a sample that is inadequate (usually because it is atypical or just too small). Stereotypes about people ("librarians are shy and smart," "wealthy people are snobs," etc.) are a common example of the principle underlying hasty generalization.

So no, generalized is the correct term thank you.

Wow, I think the males in the video got most of the negative stereotyping here. Doesn't anyone else seem to notice that the "male nurse" and the "doctor" are portrayed as complete morons? And Dickie V, well there's not really anything left to be said about him.

Personally, I've never seen a nurse or a human that was purple or green.

I don't understand why nurses get all upset and offended when nurses are portrayed "bad". It always annoyed me when nurses acted like only pure, virginal, angel like people were nurses. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! I have seen tattoo wearing, harley riding, curse like a sailor nurses ,and they are good nurses. Give it a rest!!!
