Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)

Specialties Forensic

Published

Hello all,

In the state of Illinois, there is a free SANE training and mandatory hours are needed in order to practice. These hours must be accrued in a ER setting for me to perform medical forensic examinations. My current role in Chicago as a telephonic triage nurse doesn't allow for me to perform the exams. I'm open to mentorship by a SANE in that setting to perform the medical forensic examinations. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thank You

The problem is that you really have to be on call and willing/able to drop whatever you're doing in order to attend an exam, any time, day or night. They aren't scheduled.

Thank you for responding. Yes, I understand they aren't scheduled and I have 1 yr after taking course to complete the examinations.

I think she meant the forensic exam the SANE performs on a sexual assault victim.

SANE should be happy to have you. It is an extremely difficult role. Been there, done that.

The expectation of practicing in ER is unrealistic. Will SANE arrange for.. and pay for your training?

Thank you I understand. At the completion of the Adult/Adolescent SANE Training clinical training in a ER is required to practice as a SANE. Unfortunately, I don't work in the ER.

Is your triage nurse role within a hospital system that has an affiliated ED and/or is your SANE training program affiliated with a system that has a relationship with any EDs in the area? I think you need to be able to reach out and find out what the situation is in EDs around you - in my area SANE exams are not completed within the ED/during the ED visit, for both patient- and workflow-related reasons, so attempting to get SANE experience by working/being stationed in the ED wouldn't necessarily help you. I'm assuming they wouldn't mandate an ED setting if that weren't the norm in your area, though.

I think you need to go to your instructors and try to get some information about how to reach out. I would think that if they are indeed doing the exams in the EDs in your area, one of them would be happy to have you as a trainee.

Good luck ~

Thank you. I will inquire on that.

Best,

Terrin
