Seventh Day Adventist and working on Sabbath???

Nurses Spirituality

Published

I was curious, I am a Seventh-Day Adventist and am struggling with the concept of working on Sabbath when your job, whether it be being a cop, firefighter, or someone else who is saving a life. The Bible is not always black and white and even though the Ten Commandments DO say to rest on the seventh day from all your labors, there are other instances in the Bible where helping others during time of rest are the right thing to do. What about those Nicu babies??? What about those who need constant care??? I would like input from a spiritual standpoint on how you all respect your Sabbaths and do it as a nurse.

Since the Sabbath is the Lord's day any monies earned should go to doing the work of the Lord.

I suggest that you figure what you would make on that day before taxes and donate that amount to an organization that benefits the poor and the needy.

As a Seventh Day Adventist and a CNA this is my plan to honor the Sabbath with the Lord.

Some places may choose not to hire you "unofficially." We had a case where someone pulled out a religious symbol in an interview when asked if she would be able to work every other weekend. Since they weren't sure what that response was, they chose a different candidate. I have heard of other religions making exceptions for those who provide a needed service such as firefighters, EMS crews, or nurses since we can't exactly ditch our patients.

Ellekat I am intrigued by your answer. Do you miss whatever you were getting by going to church? Is there any type of vacuum left that is unfulfilled? If not perhaps, you finally made the decision that is best for you-to stop going. But if you yearn for something that you once enjoyed there, maybe there is a better church. Ask around. I am a Christian, and personally attended church for years; but I still sat in the pews wanting a deeper, more fulfilling experience. I finally stopped going too. Only after I got involved with a group of people who helped me with reading and understanding the Word of God did I find the deep spiritual satisfaction and enlightenment of a personal relationship with God. That was many years ago. I have never missed sitting in the pews.

God bless,

Sadiem

I haven't read this entire thread, but I do work in a Jewish hospital. I know Judaism and Seventh Day Adventism aren't the same, but the views on the sabbath are similar. I've been told that in the Talmud exceptions on the sabbath are made for saving/preserving life. Pikuach Nefesh, the preservation of life, generally trumps matters of religious obligation.

I only have to work every fourth weekend, but I don't think God has a problem with it.

I have a really close friend (ACNP) who is Seventh Day Adventist. I asked her about her beliefs on working on the Sabbath and she said she believes that it is okay because Jesus also healed on the Sabbath.

Hope this helps a little.
