Seriously, resumés aren't that difficult...

Call me rude, insensitive, or mean as much as you want, but the ENDLESS threads asking for help on resumés here on this site just drive me up the wall! lol

Seriously, writing a resumé isn't that difficult. Microsoft Word has resumé templates built right it! The internet is chocked full of websites with resumé examples! You can even find NURSING resumé example templates! Good grief…

Oh, and those of you who reply to these threads saying that you just wrote a really good resumé and that you'll email it to the OP be prepared, because you're going to have about 85 other posters who will be asking for a copy of your resumé! (That's especially prevalent in the CNA forum…)

Now, I realize that we all may need a second opinion of what we've written, whether it be a term paper or a resumé or whatever, but why would you have some stranger on the internet giving you pointers when you can have a person like a friend or family member that you KNOW proofread it?!?!?!?!?! This just seems asinine to me.

I'm not sure why you expected this thread to turn into a flame war; it's actually a pretty benign issue to be honest, and could be addressed perfectly well and thoroughly without a lot of conflict. Sounds almost like you were looking for a way to stir up trouble.

At any rate, it's important to get second and third opinions on your resume, because people don't always know the right way to sell themselves, or they get so wrapped up in the things that they think are important and don't see that maybe those aren't the things an employer is looking at. I would want someone who has worked in nursing and who knows what is important to help me with my resume -- i.e a sorority membership, or volunteer yearbook editor job, while hugely improtant to the job seeker, should probably be shoved to the side in order to highlight their years as a candy striper in high school. Not to mention formatting and spelling errors.

I don't think it'a a good idea to do it on a web forum, and would discourage it; but this is a generation that is used to communicating online.

I don't mind doing it. I do it all the time for family and friends. Some people even though they know how to use a computer, they don't know how to make it look good. My way of thinking is if you offered to help one why not the others. Its not like it takes hours to do it.

You want a flame war here it goes: IF YOU WERE A REAL NURSE YOU WOULD HELP PEOPLE IN NEED >:p You would smile and be all Sammy Sunshine about it to boot! :rotfl:

Isn't the point of this website to get advice from one another? Nothing wrong with asking for help on a resume from another nurse.

I actually think it COULD be a problem, because just because most of the people that post here are nurses, doesn't mean that we/they know anything about it. Being a nurse does not equate to knowing how a nurse should write their resume....

It would be much more productive for the people that post those types of questions to seek out someone, in person, where they live, who does resumes professionally. Getting feedback here might mean getting BAD feedback, which doesn't help the poster's situation at all. There are people that help with resumes for a living. A local Job Center would be a good place to start.

Now, it might sound like a contradiction to what I just said, but I think I'm pretty good at creating a resume. I've gotten a lot of compliments on mine. The person I had proofread it for me was my sister; she's an office manager and looks at resumes on a regular basis. She was able to tell me what her "pet peeves" were (luckily, some were pretty basic mistakes that I hadn't/wouldn't make). I had someone from the Job Center also look at it, and her only potential issue with it was that it went on to a second page. When I explained to her why (hard as I tried, I couldn't get it on to one without removing pieces of info that I thought were important), she understood and agreed. I think I got more from talking to the two of them than I would have from talking to many people who don't have experience with it aside from being in the same profession I am.

When you do a resume PLEASE put your Name up top with professional title and degrees Example.

Nancy Last Name RN, BSN

Nance Last Name, LPN

Never Nancy Last Name, RN, ADN, BSN, MSN

If you use just Nancy Last Name then whats that mean? Did a resume for the janitor accidentally get sent to the nurse manager?

Also try to have it to one at the most 2 pages.. and its implied that a nurse can take vitals... why would anyone put that on their resume is beyond me.

Custom tailor the Resume to the job your looking for.

The only thing more annoying are the School threads. I wish I could find a way to filter them out. I mean its great people are going back to school. But I don't really care about XYZ Community College in Alaska's program when I live on the East Coast.
