Self magazine article

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Anyone read the article in the November issue of the Self magazine about the state of nursing. What were the general thoughts about it how it portrayed nursing and the whistleblowing that it did? Just curious what everyone else thought about it.

It's out? Did they mention the author getting FIRED for writing it?

Fiesty---

Can they do that? Isn't that an infrigement on your first amendment rights? Have you consulted an atty? This just sounds wrong. I didn't read the article (have to get it--what issue was it?) but unless there is a rider in your contract, I don't think they can terminate you from any practice in nursing for stating the obvious. If I am mistaken let me know.

Oh Rad...?

Can I take your quote and have it embossed on a T-shirt?:D

Fiesty- sorry I didn't have my facts straight, thirty lashes with the wet noodle. DID they mention you and your situation?

GO FOR IT. i AM GLAD YOU ENJOY IT. I WAS AFRAID PEOPLE WOULD BE OFFENDED, BUT ALAS, I MUST SPEAK THE TRUTH.

Fiesty-

Is it my quote or my questions r/t the legality of the situation? I am currently studing law---(LNC) I am not there yet but I have learned a few things. Let me know.

I was definitely not chuckling at the legalities of the situation. Read the article first and then get back to me. I was pretty critical about the hospital and even though they did slander me to the Dean of the nursing school, I don't think that's a battle I want to take on right now.

Fiestynurse, does't your profile state "RN JD?"

Did you pursue your law degree or give up on it? What gives?

I think this would be a perfect oppotunity for you to do something about keeping the lid on nursing shortages. This would be an excellent time to put your law degree to work. The fact that nurses are being harassed, even dismissed from their duties for speaking the truth is inexcusable. I think this is why the shortage is as bad as it is. WE can't even speak out publicly about the lack of quality of care WE provide. What ever you do I am behind you 100%. Lets open up our own nurse advocacy legal aid center (hahahahaha) I wish we lived in the same state. After I am done with my LNC I would like to continue my studies to become a nurse JD. My opinion is unless you comprimise patient care, you can't be fired or removed from your duties. As well as first amendment violations isn't it also a civil case by discrimination? Personal story that is really sad. I had an excellent nurse manager that knew one of the doctors she worked with was doing drugs. she went to him and threatened to turn him in if he didn't seek counceling. He told her he was but the hospital figured it out anyway----after he started counseling. My nurse manager got fired for not reporting it, he got three months in rehab and is still practicing in this hospital. This was so wrong!!!!!

I wish I was a nurse lawyer so I could have gone after this case. She had senority and a high pay scale. They were looking for a reason to get rid of her. I hate politics--hospital that is and I see injustice brought upon nurses everyday, after all, in the words of my current boss, everyone is replaceable. Sad state of affairs. Good luck Fiesty. I am going to stop on the way home to pick up Self magazine but I am confident I will read the truth.

buh buh for now
