Hello. I'm an Ontario CANADA RN.

I am interested in hearing from you if you are being investigated by CNO

due to Health Issues.

My email is [email protected]

PLEASE EMAIL ME if you want to share your story.

THANK YOU

This comment is in response to "loriangel" above in her Ignorant statement of "no ..that's NOT true...EAP...blah blah blah"

Dear "loriangel" , my ignorant Sister in Nursing.....you know NOT of what you are speaking !

Trust me.....I am going through this "Fitness to Practicer" committee investigation currently and since Fall of 2008

for nothing more than having been open & honest to my "Nurse" colleagues & Administrators about being off

work Spring of 2006...yep .....I said 2006 .. due to a major depressive illness which is & has been in remission

since that time since I began taking Effexor XR.

If you think you know .....you wouldn't believe what I and others just like me have been put through.

You can't even imagine it !!

I am here to tell you that it's like being Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz....cause when it happens to you

...well as much as you'll click those ruby slippers together while chanting the mantra , "they can't do that...

there's EAP" , I tell you that you'll end up saying something more along the lines of "we're NOT in KANSAS

anymore TOTO".

It's unbelieveable the Power CNO has .....and I wouldn't have believed it myself if it hadn't happened to me !!

I find these posts difficult to read, so I may not be comprehending it properly but I do believe you just called someone ignorant. That's a great way to make your point.

"ignorant" (definition)=http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ignorant

4. due to or showing lack of knowledge or training: an ignorant statement

ignorant" (definition)=

To refer to someone as "ignorant" is not necessarily to insult.

It is merely a fact that on certain subjects , especially when one is behaving like a "know-it-all" and they haven't had first hand experience and they are trying to tell a very experienced person

who is in the throes of the experience , that they (as in "I") must be mistaken , ....well....that's IGNORANT.

Thank you, I did already recognize that meaning of ignorant but I believe using that word stops the discussion because it can also be portrayed as an insult. Personally I would have used a thesaurus to find a better word choice.

You know what...You are 100% right. I DO apologize for using the word "ignorant".

It was a poor choice of words.

I am sorry " loriangel". I have to explain that I became annoyed because I felt that your comment was showing

that you aren't understanding my situation OR "the situation" that exists with Nurses who fall under the microscope of CNO if they openly admit to having suffered from Depression.

In my case it was "I" who was the "ignorant" one (if you will ) , as I was of the misguided belief that because I worked with NURSES , then I could disclose my Depresson and experience with having had Depression to my NURSE colleagues and that THEY of ALL people would be less likely to judge , would be more compassionate & with their Nursing knowledge of health issues , would be the LAST group of people to "stigmatize" their kin/kind.

BOY , was I wrong & have I paid dearly for it.

I am just wanting to hear from other Nurses who have experienced what I have been experiencing with CNO.

It is NOT my intent to engage in arguing , or the like.

So ONCE AGAIN .....I apologize for calling "loriangel" ignorant. That was wrong.

Now, let's see if this thread can move on and remain civil w/o making it personal against each other. O.k.

Carry on and please keep to the topic and help others as they post here.

Thanks.

You seem to be directing a lot of anger towards the AN users. The old saying you catch more flys with honey comes to mind. If you want people to be open with their own experiences and help you, getting everyone's back up is not a great way to start.

CNO is there not for nurses but the safety of the patients/clients etc.

It is hard when being investigated and thankfully I haven't been in that situation but some people may not want others knowing they have been investigated as they may be posting with a user name making it hard to identify them where posting certain investigations may highlight who they are.

I work in nursing management in an Ontario hospital. I have many nurses who struggle with mental health issues and some who have diagnoses of mental illnesses. I am under no obligation to report these nurses to the CNO. Over the last few years, I have reported two nurses to the CNO due to mental health issues because in both cases their mental health issue were interfering with their ability to provide safe, competent patient care. I tried to work with both of them to resolve the issues however they lacked insight into how their illnesses were impacting patient care and they refused to collaboratively work towards a solution. They both felt I had targeted them and was victimizing them and that I was discriminating against them because of their illnesses. Unfortunately cognitive distortions, and a lack of insight and judgement are part of mental illness creating a barrier that is difficult to navigate. Investigations are certainly a massive stressor, however if the end result is that the nurse accepts support that allows him/her to be a safe and competent practitioner, then that is a good result.

Even though I'm not convinced CNO has this type of power, I'd still never consider informing my employer of any mental health issues, if I was suffering from one. There's unfortunately still a very evident stigma surrounding mental illness so it's a risk I wouldn't take, especially when it's my bread and butter.

uhhh...oh yah...colleges have a tremendous amount of power...a colleague of mine was investigated by her professional college...an insurance company was trying to nail a local health clinic, and used her professional college to try and do so, dragging her along with it right in the center like convection. her life was ripped apart and then kind of raggedly sewn back together. the colleges can literally ruin your life and you can be left to hopefully pick up the pieces...this original poster is absolutely correct, imho...you dont want to be in a situation where they are investigating you for anything.
