Second-Entry Nursing Programs - 2014 Hopeful

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi Everyone!

I'm starting this topic for those who are applying to 2nd-entry programs, to start in 2014.

A bit about myself:

I'll be applying to University of Ottawa and University of Toronto.

Graduated with a Social Science degree from Ottawa U w/ 7.2 CGPA (aka 3.33 on 4.0 scale, or a B+)

A lot of community involvement in health promotion, youth counseling programs, women's health research..

Currently taking the prerequisites...

I'm kind of nervous about the applications because I know how competitive these programs are... Any advice from current 2-year BScN students would be great!

Let's get this thread going

Ok if you think it is not allowed then don't post it. Thank you for the info though. By the way did you ask if they still have empty spots available?

Thanks so much for sharing this information! I didn't hear back from UofT today either - fingers crossed for us!

Hey guys, so since I haven't heard back from UofT, I thought maybe my final marks weren't sent so I called my university and they confirmed that the final transcript was, in fact, sent. I called UofT and had a lengthy conversation with someone from the admissions office.

First of all, I didn't realize I was supposed to send my final marks through OUAC. What I did was go to my university's registrar's office and have it sent directly to the university. The person at UofT said it's ok, although submitting through OUAC is the preferred method. She said if I haven't received an email that they're missing my transcript then it means they have it.

Second, she can't tell anyone about our spot on the waitlist. By June 30th we're all aware we're getting 1 of 3 answers (offer, rejection, waitlist). I don't recall who mentioned the whole 1st group on the waitlist would get in, but I asked her about the groups and she said that not the entire group gets an offer nor is there a ranking among the people within the group; it's more of a random process.

Anyway, I hope that shed a bit of light. To those of us still waiting - I'm holding my fingers for all of us! To those who got a rejection - I'm so sorry to hear that :( and good job to those who already got an offer!

em89, I PMed you the phone number. If anyone else needs it, let me know

Hey thank you so much:) Sorry I did not know that it was not allowed otherwise would have not asked for it.

@akpl could you please message me the number you called with as well? thanks!! :)

Here is hoping for good news tomorrow guys:)

@cupteel - sent!

@lalalene, in my earlier research I also found that University of New Brunswick and St.Francis Xavier University also have programs starting in January. However, UNB's program seems a little different, because it involves a prepatory term starting September. Might be worthwhile to look into though.

This may be a bit corny, but I really believe that everyone will end up in the program that's right for them. I was extremely disappointed that I didn't get accepted to Ottawa's second entry program this spring, but now I realize that maybe it was for the better (although it's still hard to believe that sometimes!). This is a really stressful time, but I really think everything will sort itself out for everyone eventually.

I got my acceptance to the University of Tennessee Chattanooga BSN program on Monday!! Super excited and relieved!

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.
Am I allowed to leave a phone number here?

We wouldn't recommend it as this is a open site and anyone would see it. Better to be exchanged via pms

No email from UofT yet. I have no research experience and have done part time undergraduate school both of which are looked at negatively. I also did poorly during my first two years of university so my cGPA is low. I do have good references and work experience and a high GPA (3.8 in last 5 FCEs). At this point I wonder if they have sent out all acceptances since they have already started sending out wait-list offers.

To those on the UofT waitlist, would you mind sharing your stats, GPA etc. I just cant believe that all the 180 students who get accepted have research experience, high GPA or have completed a grad program.

When I was unsure about my acceptance I called the nursing admissions officer, the number is on the u of t website under contacts, and they were incredibly helpful. If anyone has questions I would advise them to call them or email connect.nursing.

I also wanted to share that even candidates with less than squeaky academic records do make it in, and I am testament to that. While I do have a number of years of research experience I also had two terrible years in my undergrad and I ended up repeating two courses from first year in my last year to boost my CGPA, and those grades were counted in my final 5 FCEs at U of T. I was very worried when applying since some schools don't count repeat courses in your GPA, but it seems like U of T did. I hope that offers some people some hope and also keep that in mind if you want to reapply next year and would like to repeat a course. With those repeat courses my 5 FCE GPA was around 3.8 depending on the calculation and my CGPA was a not stellar 3.33.
