Second-career? what was the first?

Hi all -

Just wondering - if nursing is your second career, what was your first career? why did you leave it?

I was a graphic designer for several years before I decided that it was not my "calling".

Specializes in Cardiac Stepdown and CVSICU.

i work for the government (enough said). :lol2: i will be going into my final year of the rn program in the fall; will graduate may 2008. i can't wait!

Public Relations/Marketing Account Executive.

It was fun while I was single and childless and didn't mind working the expected 50 or more hours a week. Although the pay seemed great, when you take into consideration the number of hours I had to work for that salary, it wasn't so hot. At all. So much schmoozing... after a while, I really started to hate it. Plus there was NO job security (I lost my last two jobs due to layoffs), I was up against hundreds of other applicants for even the most menial of jobs, and after taking a few years off after having my son, it was impossible to get an interview. I couldn't even THINK about working part-time... It wasn't a family-friendly profession, to say the least... at least, not in my experience (15 years).

I've always wanted to be in the heath care field, I just didn't end up there after I graduated with my first degree. I can't wait to be a nurse!!!

Specializes in TELEMETRY/CARDIAC.

I work as a credentialing coordinator. In the beginning it was fun, but now, I just cannot stand the office job anymore. No matter what you do in the office, after a while, it gets boring. I am taking pre-reqs for now, and I will go for LPN-RN route.

Specializes in ICU, L&D, Home Health.

Got the degree in Anthropology and...well...not much you can do with that. Worked with developmentally disabled adults in group homes for three years while working with the elderly as 2nd job. Then psych caseworker for two years while in nursing school. I considered a MSW, but had coworkers at psych agency with MSWs and they only made 1K more than me, with no flexible opportunities for folks with families.

You never lied on that one! I am so sick of working in an office with catty people! :trout:

I was (still am) an executive assistant - taking pre-reqs while working this job. Probably having a mid-life crisis. I'd be curious if anyone else out there was a secretary first as well? And if they are now a nurse, how do they like it?

For 10 years, I was an overpaid hairstylist. Now, I'm an unpaid Surgical Technology student. Soon, I'll be an underpaid (but very happy) CST! lol

Specializes in Mental Health and MR/DD.

Auto mechanic for FORD. Left because I didn't like the cut-throat tactics used to make a buck.

Have a degree in Mechanical Eng'g., been into heavy equipment engine sales for 13 yrs., tired of doing same thing over and over...shifted to nursing, now I'm a BSN R.N., enjoying every second of it.

these catty people have cousins....so they are everywhere.
