You will not get a temp license without meeting the provincial requirements and pass SEC. You can not take CRNE until SEC is completed as that is part of your requirements for provincial registration. Depending on where you are from will depend on what is entailed to get a tourist visa however proof of returning back home will be paramount. Getting a job offer in Canada will in most cases rely on eligibility to take CRNE or passed CRNE

thats a focused sec assessment. 5 days goodluck... CARNA is slow in correspondence. some other provinces are fast. its the same assessment for all provinces coz it the same resources made from mount royal. try to study with complete understanding of the concepts. questions are practical. some are absurd.

When are you taking your SEC?
done. ill be attending school soon.
Hi benz2222
how was SEC @ Mount Royal, whats ur experience.
you have to study for how much duration?.My friend, what books you will recommend me to study for SEC & how to organize it?
Moreover, how you scheduled SEC,did you get visit visa? My concern is that visit visa has validity of 90 days & Mount Royal Univ. don't give appointment within 90 days,as presently they are booking in May,2012,then how one can schedule SEC on the basis of visit visa???
Senior members plz give your valuable input.
Good luck

As silverdragon mentioned, you cannot get a temporary license or sit for the CRNE until you have passed the SEC and completed any additional requirements.
In terms of studying for SEC (also called CCA), please look at all the other threads in the international section related to this topic. I had taken the CCA in Manitoba in March and passed - even though I know I made a few mistakes. I would definitely recommend reviewing your nursing knowledge (look at textbooks or a review book from the past 5 years). Then go through all the resources you have been given to online practice questions - the triple jump and clinical judgement scenarios are asked very similarly to those posted online. Also, look at the Canada Nurse Act, Code of Ethics, and Nursing Standards & Scope of Practice documents.
Also, the exams itself will be over a 4-5 day period so you will be taking two exams each day for 3 days: 2 General exams (1 Multiple Choice, 1 Short Answer), 1 OB, 1 Peds, 1 Mental Health, and the self-assessment. On your clinical day, you will have the 2 OSCEs, the Triple Jump, and the Clinical Judgement Scenarios.
Hope this helps!

My Friend,
Hearty thanks for sharing.
where you had SEC? was your SEC in all ie Med surg, OB,Peds, Mental Health.
Please PM me if you want to recommend any particular books for it.whats your visa status?Did you schedule SEC with visit visa?if yes then how?
sorry I asked too many questions?
God bless you
I took my SEC in Manitoba (we call it CCA here). Yes I had to take all the sections: General, Peds, OB, Mental Health, Clinicals, and self-assessment. I'm already living in Manitoba so I didn't have to worry about getting a visit visa.
I can't recommend any books in particular except for the CNA's CRNE Prep Guide - both 4th & 5th Editions. The prep guide has practice questions so that should help in preparing both for SEC and for the CRNE when the time comes. Don't forget to actually study nursing knowledge: especially drug calculations, fundamental nursing skills, lab values, and specifics for OB, peds, and mental health. Also, you should know the basics of public health and community nursing. Also, be sure to read all the information they provide you - ex. Code of Ethics, Entry Level Competencies, Nursing Standards and Scope of Practice. Also, read the Canada Health Act. All of these things will help on the SEC.

hi I am a registered nurse in Phis and currently working as a caregiver for 7 months in Alberta. I already passed IELTS for the 2nd time and I was abe to submit my application for assessment with CARNA. What do I have to do next? How can I prepare for SEC. If I will be attending school, do I have to get a student visa because if you only have the temporary work permit you will not be allowed to take any course or professional advancement. Is there anybody who has the same situation. Please help me. I'm so confused. Thank you..
