Hi everyone! I just want to ask about nursing in Newfoundland and Labrador. Is there a SEC assessment in that province like in BC or Alberta? I tried the ARNNL official site already and there was no mention of that. I even googled it but I cant seem to find anything.

SEC isn't done in all provinces and a lot will depend on transcripts and what sort of experience you have. Even then you may still be required to do some sort of assessment.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

I'm curious to know why people are so reluctant to demonstrate their competence in nursing. It seems the number of IENs looking for a way to avoid any sort of skills assessment has grown quite dramatically in recent weeks.

Specializes in intensive care, recovery, anesthetics.

I thought you were invited in BC to take SEC, why aren't you finishing your application there??

Refer to my post just above yours, 5cats.

Actually I'm already invited in BC. Its just that somebody, a family friend emailed me a week ago about nursing in NFL. I have been checking it out since then. About IEN's dodging the SEC assessment, I dont know about that. Its more on the financial side I think just like in my case. You try being a nurse in the Philippines for about three months in a public hospital caring for twenty patients with no pay, with only your love for the profession as a consolation. You know what I mean? I know there are some bad apples but dont generalize everyone. Thank you for the reply

And what, exactly, does that have to do with demonstrating your abilities during an assessment? Do those who will be paying you for your work not have the right to satisfy themselves that you can actually DO the work they'll be paying you for? Do those with whom you will be working not deserve to know that they're working with someone whose skills are on par with their own, that patients will be cared for safely and ethically by every nurse on the unit? Look at the huge number of posts here that are asking, "Where can I work in Canada where I don't have to do SEC?" and you'll maybe understand why I've asked the question. The profession of nursing in Canada is vastly different from that of the Philippines; the regulatory bodies and employers have an obligation to ensure that ALL nurses meet a minimum standard of care and that is what SEC is about. You may be a brilliant nurse with exceptional skills but I want to know that before I hire you.
