Seattle University APNI 2016 Applicants

Published

I thought I would start a thread for applicants to the 2016 MSN for Non-Nurses: Advanced Practice Nursing Immersion at Seattle University. I am applying for the Family Nurse Practitioner specialty. Any other applicants for this cycle? Questions and comments regarding the program and admissions process are welcome!

I'm not sure if everyone follows the Seattle University APNI Applicants group on Facebook but it's full of information.

Current student, Kyle Fuhriman (whom attended at least one of the info sessions,) is also on there often, answering questions for us. I thought I would pass this information from him along to everyone here in case you're trying to get a gauge on this interview process:

First, applicants from different tracks are not necessarily grouped into just one or two of the interview dates. For example, last year I was a student interviewer in the FNP track. We interviewed all 4 Saturdays of FNP. I know there were 4 interview days for AGNP, and at least 3 for the rest of the tracks. So the rumor that some tracks interview before others doesn't hold true. Also of note with regard to this: I spoke with someone today on faculty that is reviewing applications. She mentioned that she had scored about half of the applicants in her stack (they are reviewed by 2 faculty, I believe) and had dozens to go. So, if you do not have an invite this week, or even next, don't despair. Whether you interview last or first, getting an interview invite is all that matters. You may be at the top of the eventual "admit list" at the end of the interview process, but may not actually interview until the last day.

Thanks so much for the info, nikxi36! That's super helpful. :) Do you happen to know if that's the case for all of the tracks? It makes sense for FNP and even AGNP, but I thought that the other tracks typically received fewer applicants. Still a decent number, but nothing like FNP, so I wouldn't expect it to take as long as it takes to review the FNP applications. Also, at least based on forum threads from previous years, it seems that some tracks (I'm thinking specifically of psych, since that's the one I readily remember, probably because it's the track I applied to) started sending out acceptances right away (within a few days of the first interview date). So, that seems somewhat contrary to the idea that one could be at the top of the admit list despite not interviewing until the last day.

I realize you personally don't necessarily know how to expand on that, but if any other info is mentioned regarding this, I wouldn't mind hearing (sorry, I don't have a Facebook account). I really hope that information is accurate for all tracks, though, as I would be heart-broken not even get an interview, and it'd be all the better if I knew that getting an interview on the second or third interview day didn't necessarily mean at best I'd be waitlisted.

Thanks again for sharing the info! You rock! :D

Such great info on this page! Has anyone called the admissions office to find out the total number of applicants for each specialty? It seems like others have gotten that information in years past.

im obsessively checking my email hoping for an interview. Sigh.

@PallasAthene-- According to Kyle's post, it sounds as if all FNP applications aren't scored yet. He posted that on 1/25. I would imagine they're still working on it? Perhaps we'll start seeing FNP interviews for the following interview weekend.

As far as interview dates, it sounds that they have chosen, I found a post by Kyle from 1/14:

It appears that the interview dates are set for the Saturdays of Jan 30, Feb 6, Feb 20, and Feb 27. If tradition holds, if you interview on Jan 30, you may only have a couple of days notice between invitation and interview., but I am not privy to when invites will go out--Im just assuming based on the pattern over the past few years. Keep in mind, not all tracks may be interviewed on all dates.

I'm just as anxious as you are-- I even had a dream that I was called for an interview last night. :D

Tired, I don't think anyone has deigned to ask...perhaps out of fear :)

If you decide to call, let us know what you find out!

Last year, my psych interview invite was at the end of February and there were 4-5 other individuals who interviewed before me on the same day. So they do have at least 5-7 different days they conduct interviews for their applicants, not all on the same day such as UCSF. If you haven't heard from Seattle do not worry, you really have until the end of February to hear about your interview invite. Just hang in there!

Also your interview date has nothing to do with your "rank" as an applicant.

Thanks, everyone! All of this information is super helpful, and at the very least, it's nice to have others to wait with and who appreciate how stressful this process can be. I know my friends and family are getting tired of hearing me express my anxiety with this wait. Haha. I'm wishing nothing but the best for all of us. :D Oh, and nixi36, I totally wish I even had a dream telling me I got an interview. Apparently not even my dreams are giving me that. Haha.

Tired-o-waiting - What track did you apply for? I know the wait is super stressful, but at least we have each other. I thought about calling to ask the other day, about how many applicants and whatnot. Who would one call to get that information? The admissions office or the nursing department?

Hang in there, everyone!

It's good to read through the thread and see I'm in the same boat as everyone else in regards to waiting. Part of me feels nervous that some psych track people already received invites to interview and I've haven't heard anything, but on the flip side there are still several more interview days left. OHSU already contacted me for an interview for their program and I felt at the time of application that my application to SU was probably stronger than my application to OHSU. So on that completely subjective basis I'm going to feel positive about my chances of still being contacted by SU later in the month. ;)

I really appreciate the information from those who've gone through the process before as it makes me feel a little calmer about this whole crazy process --keep it coming!

To Tired-of-waiting and PallasAthene: I have no idea how many have applied to each track but I would guess 400-600 total. The faculty member at the information session said they expected this year's number of applicants to be higher than last year. I believe last year it was over 400 applicants for all specialties, but I don't know the break down by track.

Thank you so much for the information! I was getting a bit discouraged, as many were saying that all of the public health and psych invites had gone out. It didn't seem correct, so I'm relieved to have some reassurance from people who have already gone through the process.

Someone just posted on the Facebook group that they received 400 some applications total this year.

Also, in case anyone wants to know, I just checked back on the Facebook group and found that last year, this was the number of people per track (there may be 1-2 more or less people this year per track though):

FNP: 18

Adult/Gero: 14

Midwifery: 12

Psych: 11

Community: 9

Oh, and I forgot to post that she said that they're still going through applications and "are hoping to get the word out for most interviews by feb 16"

Thank you Curious! That's good to know.

I wish we knew how many applications for each track. If anyone has any insight, please share!
