Anyone already applying at Seattle U? Which track? I haven't finished my pre-req's, so I am probably not too competitive this year, but I am going to apply anyway. I am applying for the nurse-midwife track and my background is Microbiology (UW).
Calinca - I believe we have the same screen name! I think Calinca (Калинка) in Russian means Juniper.
Clinicals so far:
1. Be prepared for a ton of paperwork related to your assigned patient! The pre-clinical and post-clinical work often takes 12-15 hours.
2. Come to clinical prepared with a plan for which specific competencies you are going to attempt to meet that day. At the end of every clinical experience, you have to prove that you've met all of the required competencies.
3. For our cohort, the clinical experiences were in this order: Geriatrics in the summer, Maternity in the Fall, Pediatrics and Psychiatrics in the Winter, community and Med/Surg in the spring. For the cohort above us, the order was a little different, so it might be different for you as well.
4. Clinicals for the first year happen at many different hospitals and facilities, mostly in Seattle but some a short drive away. So far, I have gotten by without a car by carpooling and walking to clinicals.
5. For most clinicals, plan to show up the day or night before your clinical day to gather information and meet your patient.
6. Clinicals start about a month into the program, but they start off fairly easy.
Let me know if there is anything else you would like to know about clinicals or the program!
Junipers! Thank you so much for the very detailed post, I really appreciate it. I'm so excited just by having been invited for an interview. Luckily, the UW has a great career center for students and alumni and I'll probably take advantage of their mock interviews. I hope this will translate to a calm, honest interview and hopefully they will like that!
I'm not Russian, are you? I have been using Calinca as a screen name since, mmmm 1992 or 1993, so.. a life. :) It's a long story..
So, correct me if I am wrong: during the clinicals, we are assigned one (more?) patient(s) and have to do write-ups about their condition/assessment/diagnosis/treatment? What other details are included in these write-ups? Well, as a microbiologist, I work with detail very well, and I can write a lot, so I guess I have an idea.
How's it in the begining, as in, what exactly do we do while meeting with the patient? I remember when I had my kids at the Valley and Overlake, sometimes there would be a student nurse tagging along my nurse and she would take my blood pressure, check my incisions, ask me some questions, check temperature.. is that what we would be doing? How's the psych track? I have no idea! Do we stay with one nurse that one day or do we go from nurse to nurse to nurse?
What kind of shoes do you suggest? LOL I know this is a little bit early, but I am daydreaming about this whole thing so much! I am taking genetics at the UW right now and I am hoping I can concentrate enough to get a good grade LOL.
I applied to the CNM track as well, so I hope you will allow me to pick your brain from time to time.
Can you tell me more about the pharmacology course we have in the summer? My mother is a pharmacist, so I already asked her what to expect, but she also took it a very long time ago, maybe things are different now. Does it involve a lot of chemistry/pathways/calculating stuff? Or is it mainly memorizing symptoms, active substance, interactions, etc? Oh, I remember reading that the first pharm course is not a pathopharm, so maybe it is a little different?
So far, everything is done together with all the specialties, no midwifery distinction? And then in june you separate?
Any cool things to say about your next year in the specialty that you have heard/learned recently? Do you like your professors?
Calinca
