CHED orders addition of 2 new nursing subjects
In a bid to ensure the quality of future nurses, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has ordered the addition of two new subjects in the nursing curriculum that will focus on teaching freshmen nursing students the ethics and commitment involved in the profession.
The subjects - Theoretical Foundation in Nursing and Fundamentals of Nursing Practice - will be added to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) curriculum starting school year 2008-2009 as contained in CHED Order Number 5 series of 2008.
For full text, visit: http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?&aid=2008051064&type=2&
Now that the additional of subjects is official, tuition fees will increment on top of the every school year tuition fee increase of some schools.
hi guys! i'm new here and i find this forum very helpful. thank you for sharing your knowledge as well as your experience! It's really a great help. I'm now planning to take up nursing on year 2008, probably summer, itll be my 2nd course, i graduated wih a degree in business. And now i have decided to shift my career. The following are my preffered schools:1. University of makati/pamantasan ng Lunsod ng Makati
2. Manila Doctor's College
3. PWU/Philippine Women's University- Taft.
I prefer to study on one of the schools i mentioned. But i would like to learn more about the quality of education that these schools offer. I wanted to take up my 2nd degree in a good school that offers quality education.
I heard positive feedbacks about Manila Doctors, but it will take me another 4 years to finish the course as they are strict when it comes to the schedule.
PWU offers a 2 yr program for 2nd coursers but i heard a lot of negative things about this school so i was quite disappointed.
While I heard that UMAK seems to be a good school, however, i'm way too far from this school as i live in cavite. Though what is most important to me is the quality of teaching. I would like to pass the NLE. This time. i'll make sure that i'll be more serious with my studies as Nursing is not an easy career.
Please help me which school i should choose. Which among these is better?
I would really apprecate your help.
Thank you and God Bless everyone!
hi bianca4.. would like to ask if you have already decided where to enroll this school year. actually i am confused o whether to take PWU because of their 2 yr program of Perpetual in LAs Pinas (they have already credited some of my minor subjects and I am in Level II). But i still havent enrolled yet just assessment. Did you pursue with PWU??
Also, can anyone give me an advise which is better.PWU of Perpetual. I heard that PWU is not that good. Is that true? thanks
Just some advice, please look for schools who have a base hospital so that you can be sure you can have your clinical duties. And every school has its pros and cons, so be sure you thoroughly researched the school, and it doesn't hurt if you visit the school of your choice.
And Our Lady of Fatima University is good IF you go to their Valenzuela campus. The other campus (the Quezon City one) is... well, every man for himself.:)
im just new here, i want to ask if the school listed were accepting transfer student for second sem, im at my 4th year undergrad but i stop so been 3 years wasted, do you think i can have schedule same as those 2nd courser/
Yes, most of the schools listed accept transferees. You might also look on other top performing schools that are not listed here. Good luck!
oh my! i feel like an american nut.
i'd like to get a bsn and would like to attain it in the philippines. i think that the country is neat, albeit, from my perspective a bit odd at times, and i would like some nursing experience outside of the us.
my requirements:
a really nice small city that's sweet, and safe, relatively unpolluted, where i can find decent accommodations and work with nice people. manila scares me, it's too big and i'm just a farmin' country boy. smaller is better in my book. positives would be no crime, safety, and charm--nice beaches would be good too. i'm quite willing to learn tagalog, or visayan.
i'd like a school with a lot of beautiful single filipina co-students. hey, i'm single and adore dark hair, dark eyes and dark skin. i'm just being totally honest here. (i like the ethics of the philippine people and no longer care for american women, so i'd like to come back home with the degree and with something more.
oh, and a decent school with any sort of hospital or clinics is fine. i really don't care about all the fancy equipment; i don't mind "making do." a few exemplary professors would be nice, they create synergistic energy that makes it all worth it. i can sit through boring classes as well as anyone. i tend to learn most on my own anyway.
i suspect that the biggest problems that i'd have is that i'm male, and 48. now in america this is no issue, but i suspect that in the phils it might be. maybe they would say i'm too old? i'm not too old in america.
i do fear being bored in classes, but can live with that. i've a bs in chemisty, a second bs in safety engineering and an adn (associates degree in nursing). i've passed the nclex four years ago and went from hospital medical/surgical to a tertiary care ((extremely large) regional hospital where i was an adult icu nurse. currently i'm interested in occupational & environmental nursing (i'm not sure the phils even acknowledge that) and am rn manager of an industrial occupational health clinic at gm (general motors).
i'd just like to live in the phils for awhile, and since i don't have a bsn, why not?
agreed it could be a bit odd as i don't need the nle, or the nclex as i've been an rn with subspecialty certs for many years. but i'd really like to see and experience a good (note: not the best) school.
someone posted this and i like it:
"anyone interested in getting your bsn from a reputable college should have pwu at quezon city on your short list of schools. they have a trimester program for 2nd coursers that will get you to graduation in less than 2 years. it's not a school for a lazy student. you will have to have the discipline to read and study on your own. they do not spoon feed you the information that you need to pass the boards. they sometimes don't list the pages you need to read. they believe you are a professional and hence don't need to tell you the pages numbers. if you can't find the topic within the textbook then you have bigger issues.
they present the material via powerpoint and it gives you enough information to pass their exams. there is really no need to take notes since they hand you the presentation at the end of class. pwu believes you are there to learn the material and not waste your time scribbling down notes. but it will be your job to reinforce the material from the textbooks to fully understand the material for the nursing boards. (tip: be prepared to look at other textbooks beyond what they recommend)"
that sounds like a progressive, my kind of school.
i may sound flippant but i'm not. suggestions would really be appreciated.
thanks,
steve

For various reasons, I am not updating the information in the list of schools. I would gladly discourage those who are planning in enrolling to a nursing school this June due to the fact that there are hundreds of thousands nursing graduates in our country. Please don't add to those statistics when your heart is not in nursing in the first place. Second, if your plan is to go out of the country especially in the US, it ain't happening for retrogession in is in place right now. Passing the NCLEX, the local board, IELTS and other exams is not an assurance that you can get out of the country. Third, you will master poor nursing skills molded by substandard nursing schools. It was decades ago that nursing in PI has a good reputation. Fourth, few local jobs are only offered, there is freeze hiring of the hospitals. See other multiple threads on RNs not having a job. If they do, it's probably a call center, medical or health representative jobs or others not related to nursing. Most end up unproductively bumming in their own home.
In my own point of view, if it's a calling for your to pursue nursing then go ahead. Follow your dreams. But please don't get carried by the insistent recommendation of your parents or relatives. You are old enough especially the second coursers to decide for yourself and determine what you really want.
