School rant

Nursing Students General Students

Sorry but I need to whine a little. Today in PSY we had a quiz. It is on the course outline that was handed out the first day of class so it SHOULD HAVE been no surprise to anyone. Yet, there were people that we like "oh no! we have a test today?". So, what does my instructor do? Tells them to leave and take the test in the testing center tomorrow. WHAT THE HELL!!! Then, some guy walks in FORTY MINUTES LATE (the entire calss is only 50 minutes) and she gives him HER study guide with all the answers already filled out and tells hime to take the test tomorrow. We all got the study guide Friday but we all had to look up the answers over the weekend. It's just not fair (I know, I sound like I'm 8 years old) that all those irresponsible people will end up getting the same or even better grade than those of us who actually know how to read a course outline and show up to class.

Then, in Math class a lot of people bombed the last quiz. Because of that, he spent an extra day going over the material so now we are a day behind. That means that there will no longer be a final review day at the end of the semester. You know why everybody bombed the quiz? Because they don't do their homework or take notes. So, because they can't be responsible I get to miss out on a review for the final. UGH!!!!!!!

Don't worry about sounding like an 8 year old - that's what ranting is all about...getting it out of your system.

I had a real hard time with this when I started back to school. I am married with children; at the time I still had a full-time job. When things like this happened, I had the exact same feelings. I would be like, but I have all these responsibilities BESIDES school and I still was able to get it done - or study - or just show up..period! So, it's okay to feel aggravated. Just know you are not alone and we are here for each other to lean on or vent to. SMILE :)

I know exactly how you feel. I think we waste 50% of the lecture time waiting while other people whine and ask exactly what they need to study for the test. We are all adults and we have chosen to become students so we need to act like one.

That's so unfair. I don't blame you for being upset. I would have gone to the teacher after class the day she gave the late boy her filled out guide. I would not complain to her, but I'd ask her if I could have a copy of it also, that I filled mine out myself but I wanted to make sure my answers matched hers. At least that would put you on the same level as the other guy. Actually, it would put you much higher because the fact that you looked up all the answers and wrote them down means that the info will stick in your mind a lot better than just looking at a filled-out guide. That's the purpose of the guides anyway, right?

I totally feel you, though, I would be frustrated also. Just remember, not all classes are going to do this and you stand an awesome chance of passing the hardest classes there if you stick with your current study habits.

Speaking of waiting, in PSY class we are suppose to start at 7 am. Most people show up between 7:10 - 7:20 so she never starts lecture until at least 7:20. That leaves 30 minutes for lecture and she wanders off the subject so much that we probably oly get about half of that for actual lecture. One time I was running late for class and walked in right at 7:00 and I was the only one there!

Man, that sucks. I know how that feels to be ultra prepared and then at the last minute the instructor decides to dumb down the test to accomodate the dullards/lazy folks who couldn't be bothered to study. Chaps my hide sometimes too.

In the nursing program I am in, it is ruled with an iron fist. If you aren't prepared, oh well! The very least that will happen is you will get yelled at (and a bad grade to boot). So at least this isn't happening in the nursing program, but I've had that same thing go on in regular classes.

I have a lot of people come to class late. It's very annoying but this semester both of my teachers take attendance and make people down for being late also. I'm not sure if it's because some of them are so young and don't study and then wonder why they get 50% on tests.

I have a girl in my Organic Chem who didn't show up for the first test last Wed but came next class period, Friday. I'm like "I thought you dropped. You didn't take the test." She said she called the teacher Wed morning in a panic telling her she was having a nervous breakdown about the test and she gets to take it tomorrow, 1 1/2 weeks after the initial test! I don't think she's bright and that the extra time won't help. My only consolation is that she won't get the extra 3 points the teacher gave to everyone when she curved the test. It just doesn't seem fair. You're there or you're not.

It's only going to bite the slackers in the butt one of these days. I am in the Nursing program, and although we do not get points for being in lecture, they still take attendance, and half the time the same people are absent, walk in late, or leave half way through the lecture AFTER they got the outline for the class. They are usually the ones who aren't doing well grade wise, and piss and moan about doing poorly in the class. I figure, I should just worry about myself and let them keep on slacking, because one of these days, they will live to regret it. Those are the kinds of people I NEVER want to work with, they will be the ones who take alot of breaks, late to work, call off, etc. etc. NOT GOOD.

I wish i could blow this post up to banner size and hang it up in every classroom at school! I am really working on my patience level, because i have plenty for my 5 year old, not so much left over for adults who refuse to do the work needed to get the grade that they desire, and then complain about everything under the sun as an excuse to why they aren't doing well. I hate having the teachers move the schedule around to accomodate these folks, because usually it messes up my schedule. The most irritating thing are the people who come in 15 minutes before the test and expect you to tutor them for those 15 minutes to pull them through. Not only is that not going to work, but i like to silently quiz myself and go over my notes a bit to get into the testing frame of mind during that time. Then there are the students who get a study guide and STILL don't look over the information. These same folks think they are going to get into the Dental/Nursing programs and there just is no way that it is going to happen. All they are doing is taking up a seat and wasting their money. These are the sort of students who wear teachers out to the point that they have no tolerance for anyone any longer and won't allow makeup tests or late work even in the most extreme circumstances. That hurts everybody. We had a girl who was in a car crash on the way to Bio Anthropology and she had all the documentation in the world and she had to drop because she missed the test and there are no makeups. I know for a fact that this teacher instituted this zero tolerance policy because of students taking advantage so much in the past. sad.!

Amen to all of you! I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way. I thought I was being unreasonable. Well, not to offend anyone, but I've had a professor tell me, after I complained about the same things, "That's the way these students from the "self-esteem generation" are." They went through a period in educational history where it was politically correct to make them feel better about themselves instead of truthfully grading their work and giving constructive criticism. Sorry to say, I think its true. I mean, my first time around in college I was alot younger and irresponsible; however, I showed up for class and didn't carry on conversations during lecture like alot of the students do now. I actually walked out of a college history class last semester because of the chaos. THAT did get the professor's attention and things changed for the better.

Oh yeah, I also got brave and "just said no" to lazy people wanting to see my homework. Hell, I'll be 40 soon, what do I care if they like me or not?:chuckle

Rn to be .....are you at a community college??? I have found that they don't put up with that sh*t at a university. It is very irritating. I just let the slackers be slackers. Someday, when these peole enter the real world, they will realize that everything is not supposed to be handed to them. And then they will struggle.....

Yes, I am at at CC. I just keep telling myself that it won't be like this in nursing school (I hope).
