School Nursing capstone project idea?

Hi!

Next week I start my BSN capstone (I graduate in July, thank goodness). I have to come up with a subject for my capstone and I would really like to do something pertaining to school nursing, as that is the field I currently have a foot in the door of, and hope to be full time in the fall.

Anyone have a topic they think would be a good idea for this? I've already done a project on school wellness and the effects of diet/exercise on obesity/diabetes dx. So I would love to do something else for the capstone.

Any help would be appreciated.

I did my BSN Capstone project on Concussions/Head Injury in school setting. Lots of research available and programs to discuss. I had debated a couple other topics, but did quick searches in databases for peer reviewed articles, and concussions had a plethora. I hate struggling to find enough research to meet paper length requirements.

I too am looking for a topic for my capstone project and was just wondering if coping with loss from suicide or youth suicide prevention would be a good topic. We had a young boy locally who committed suicide recently, and I have seen several articles that schools often react poorly when this type of situation occurs. However, it is unfortunately, a relatively common event in our society. Good luck on your project!

I'm so sorry, been there, done that...

NAMI is a great resource on pre and postvention. Check your local chapter, they may be able to help you insetting up the capstone with all the resources they have.

I think this would be an excellent capstone project. And something that you can use since you have had to unfortunately experience this issue.

Currently, I am looking up research about mental health and school nursing, and the use of school nursing services by low socioeconomic populations to see where the research is plentiful.

Awesome!! I helped write the NHSNA position statement on that! Unfortunately, our school board does not support it.

That is awesome! Yes, my whole big city has it in every school. None of the schools have ever had to use it (yet), but I have sat over a geriatric patient at my other job while EMTs administered it, silently praying that his issue was a drug overdose and not a stroke, and that the narcan would work. (It didn't and he died....very sad). This would be an interesting subject to look more into. Thanks!

Yes, research available will be how I decide on a topic in the end, as struggling to find information is a pain. Concussions are a great topic, and with all of the talk about them in the past few years, I bet there was plentiful research to pull from. Hmmm...
