Hello! I am Gina, I am nurse and see kids in the infirmary at a school from scholarship to 12 grade! Some teachers and my director want me to call parents for everything! Someone suggested that I show my director that calling parents for everything is not necessary! How can I do this?

Thank you!

I typically only call home if I personally have concerns about outcomes as the day/evening progresses; Minor cuts and bruises, the one off complaint of a sore throat/headache/tummy ache, sand in the eye, etc. do not get a call home. The the kid who complains all day but is clinically clear to stay in school, the head injuries and more concerning musculoskeletal injuries, and anyone who gets an OTC medication gets a phone call. And of course, anyone who needs to go home.

Lets see... I only call home if necessary. Obviously for the actually ill kids, and major injuries.

For other stuff... I call home for facial/head injuries, multiple "illness" visits, anything I think is concerning, etc.

If I called home every time a student came to visit, I'd be on the phone all day.

Perhaps as a compromise, you can call for the big/important/concerning things and send a note home with the student for the minor things.  I know some schools do this.  It could even be just a generic note that says something like "Your child was seen by the school nurse today for ___________.  Please call ####-### if you have any questions."

My school has carbon copy nurse passes.  #1, the kids think it is magic when I hand them the paper with the writing on it.  #2, I tell the teachers that they can send that copy home or whatever they want to do with it.  The teachers have documentation that they at least sent the student to the clinic.

Hello dear! thanks for your opinion, I really aprecciate it!

Me and my co-worker, realize that there was a complot towards me, from some administrative areas co-workers, mean for instance, teachers! They think they know everything, even more than the nurses here, very disapointed, because, they were talking bad thing to our headteacher! hoping she believe in pur knowledge and work.

Hello darling! yea me also do in the same way, the matter here is that we realize teachers think they know more that the nurses! so they want something we cant as the point of view of a responsable health care, hoping our headteacher can deal with this in the best way and towards us as  nurses.

Hi dear! thanks, thats a good idea, we already did always! we use the note always, in the minor and major cases, and call, the important ones to the parents, but you know that matter here is, some teachers think they know more than us! so there are disagreements, from they to us, so hoping his can be solve and clear soon.

Hello my dear nurses! Hoping you doing good today Friday!

As I mentioned in a previous post, my co-partners, mean teachers and headteacher, are obsessed that me as a nurse in the school, call parents for every situation, I think this is ridiculous!

A nurse suggested me a very good idea I will put in practice soon, but first I would like to ask you what do you think about it? Any comment or tip? Is there something more to add?

Well the idea is to send emails to parents.

I will keep calling parents everything is needed!! thats for sure.

But now also I will keeping sending emails in any situation, no matter if it is a broken nail. The minor and major cases.

I will send it not just to parents, also the kids teacher and his/her coordinator. Imaging all those emails coming!! ?

Here is the draft I did, all in super black ink, please help me with your comments!

Date:     time:   grade:

Students name:

Situation:

Actions done:

Recommendations:

Must goes to home or not:

If you have any comment, please email me or send a message to this number____.

Hoping your thoughts! to decide if it is right or something else, thanks and have nice week my nurses.

Miss Gina.
