School Nurse License Question

Hello!

I have been an ICU nurse for 10 years and have recently accepted a job as a school nurse. I live in Ohio. I was told to go to the Ohio Dept of Education website and apply for a license under pupil services. I did that. So, will I be able to say I'm a "licensed school nurse" then? Or is that something you have to take a class to get?

I would call one of your local schools and ask their nurse. In Pennsylvania, you need to have a BSN and also additional classes in education and school nursing to e a certified school nurse but every state is different.

That is probably a temporary license to work for one year in the school system. You will most likely have to take a class or two to get your actual school nurse license. Call your board of Ed and speak to Human Resources and they can tell you for sure. It may be different in your state.

I live in Ohio and am a nurse for Head start. I wanted the same thing..I would call the board of education... but from what I have learned the temp pupil services is used while you take classes in order to get the professional license. In ohio there are only a few places that actually give the school nurse license certificate. I would go to the Ohio school nurse website to find out more information. I was told that I would have to do more school and I have a Masters degree, the classes I took that i thought covered what was needed for school nursing did not. I decided it was not worth the money to spend. I just wanted it the easy way if i could have.. not that I was opposed to learning..

I live in Minnesota and also had to apply for an LSN license through our state's Department of Education. To be a LSN I have to have at least a BSN and be licensed as a public health nurse. I did not have to take extra classes. If I want to be a certified LSN I would need to take a certification exam similar to other specialties in which I could be certified.
