Hello good people,
I was cleared by a school district after an interview for a school nurse position. A school called me for an interview with the principal. What do I expect from the principal. I really need this job so badly. Thanks for your answers...

I actually admit that is why I got into this gig. But after 14 years, multiple schools and renewing my NCSN twice, I think they get that I accidentally found my passion.
Tilly, that may have had NOTHING to do with you. Principals...well, they think they know what they want and unfortunately while most appreciate the idea of having a good nurse, many don't know what that actually means. Also you may be lucky....who knows....onward and good luck with the next interview!
Hello Nurse Tilly,
Everything rubyjane said and there is always the possibility they knew who they were going to hire yet they have to hold interviews and go through the motions. You just chalk this up to more interview experience for you and on to the next one. Will keep the good vibes coming :))))

I have had a few different school nurse interviews in the last few years and these were some of the questions. The things listed by the above posters were there and I was also asked:
What would you do if a med error occurred?
How would you handle an angry parent in general?
How would you handle an angry parent that had to take their child to the ER for an appendectomy last night after you had seen the child in your clinic, sent them back to class, and did not call to let the parents know you had seen the child that day?
If you have any experience with diabetes, seizures, ADHD, Mic-Key buttons, tube feedings of any variety, feeding pumps, trachs, etc ?
Emergency response experience.
What are you ideas about organizing a health fair?
Had I ever had to call CPS?
Tell us what you know about HIPPA / FERPA in the school setting.
Tell us what you know about ARDs, 504s, and IDEA.
Those last two were at a large district and it didn't play. I was glad I had experience as a school nurse or I wouldn't have had a clue.
Always be ready with the good old give us three strengths and weaknesses answers too. Not everyone has asked but a few did.
Have a few questions for them as well at the end of the interview even if you already know the answers. As Like the Dead Sea said to be familiar with the school demographics just in case they ask. Find out if they are Title I, what is their free and reduced lunch status if it is a lower socioeconomic environment. Ask what are your student's parents like? What is their level of involvement?
Best of luck and I hope it all goes well. Just know you have a great place here on Allnurses to ask questions.
Let us know how it goes.
Hello there ?
This site will walk you through the ARD (Admission, Review and Dismissal) from special education services process https://www.navigatelifetexas.org/en/education-schools/ard-process
This explains IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) https://sites.ed.gov/idea/
www.understood.org will explain 504
Med errors: Assess student and if in a non emergency situation I would notify the parent, doctor, and my supervisor. If emergency: 911, parent and doctor.
Angry parents: I let them get it all out and then address their concerns in a calm manner.
The appendectomy question: I explain what the situation was (which must have been a run of the mill stomach ache with no s/s of distress or I wouldn't have let them go back to class) and that my assessment at the time did not require calling the parent. BTW - I am at junior high now and I end every visit with these kids that are heading back to class -IF anything changes come back and we will call Mom and see what she wants to do? Saves a lot of,"Why didn't you call me???" phone calls from parents. I very rarely have a return visit.
These are the biggies.
I am sorry but I have a meeting that I have to be at and have run out of time.
I will get back on and finish in a bit :)))
Good luck :))))
There is nothing to calling CPS. When a student comes to you and you feel a CPS call is warranted you can call the 800 number and speak to a real person or go online and submit the report.
NASN explains HIPPA - FERPA In the schools.
HIPAA and FERPA
Background
In 1996, the U.S. Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA). The purpose of HIPAA is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the health care system by standardizing the electronic data interchange of certain administrative and financial transactions. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued regulations that focus on three areas:
Privacy Rule – Establishes privacy requirements for oral, written or electronic individually identifiable health care information. Compliance Date - April 13th, 2003. The HIPAA Privacy Rule excludes from its provisions all education records covered by the Family Educational Right and Privacy Act (20USC 1232g), including individually identifiable student health information.
Security Rule – Establishes security requirements for electronic health care information. Compliance Date - April 21, 2005
Transaction Rule – Standardizes formats for electronic health care claims and transactions. Compliance Date - October 16, 2003.

These are quickies. I hope this makes it to you before your interview.
Best of luck.

I also got question about dealing with a secretly pregnant student or suspected addictions. Some things caught me off-guard because school was a new and very different environment. I seemed to get by well by saying that, saying I looked forward to learning from the other school nurses, and saying I would refer to the school policies to find the best way to respect the student's privacy and still ensure their safety.
