Scheduling question

Just a quick survey: how does your unit handle staffing? Self scheduling? Cyclic schedule? Nurse manager/supervisor does the schedule working around days that staff requests off?

Thanks for your input!!!

To those who do self-scheduling, how does that work? I am curious.

Our managers print out a "blank" schedule and we just pencil in our days, requests off, etc. We are now implementing the use of Shift Select (Concerro) which is online. I have used it in the past at my previous employer and I liked it. Pretty much the same thing except now you can make your schedule at home.

We self schedule. Half out time has to be off shift (eves or nights). After all full and part time staff schedules themselves then per diems can sign up. Then someone goes through and highlights all the open shifts. Then we all have to go back and make at least one change to help an empty shift. Our hardest shifts/days to fill are always Mondays & Fridays and weekend nights. We have to schedule ourselves 32 hours weekend time. Technically we are supposed to split our off shift between eves and nights....doesn't always happen. My boss is dead set against hiring for one shift but luckily we have a lot of nurses that do straight nights. After we make out changes the scheduler and the nurse manager still sometimes change us which sucks because the schedule always comes out nit even a week before it starts and we are all always counting in working what we schedules ourselves. We have so many spots in the sign up labeled specifically for nurses who can do labor and nurses who can do special care nursery.

We have just started self scheduling - and so far it is working well! We have required weekends. Some do every other and others do every third, so those are marked in for us. We also have holidays that are already marked in. If you have specific requests off, you can submit those and those days will be x'd out. We are required 3-12 hour shifts a week (weekends included) and 1-8 hour call shift every other week.
