Just a quick survey: how does your unit handle staffing? Self scheduling? Cyclic schedule? Nurse manager/supervisor does the schedule working around days that staff requests off?

Thanks for your input!!!

self scheduling with mandatory weekends!

The NM schedules after we request the days we want off. If there is a conflict, the person who asks first gets the day off.

Self scheduling until it's inconvenient. Then your requests are void when the demand doesn't meet anything you've scheduled. Alternate weekends/holidays of course.

I'm part-time, management has assigned a 6 week rotating days/eve cycle with every other wknd off. Full-time works 12 hr days shifts or 12 hr nights on a 6 week schedule.

I can usually pick up enough shifts to get myself close to full-time hours.

We do self scheduling for a period of 5 weeks at a time. Within that time we have to work 4 weekend days, 2 mondays and 2 Fridays. We can put it in up to 6 requests off for any days.

We work a set schedule and every-other-weekend. Ex: Tues Eve, Fri day, SA/SU every other.

To those who do self-scheduling, how does that work? I am curious.

we self-schedule and have to work 4 weekend shifts/month. For night shifters, that is Friday night & Saturday night; for day shifters, that is Saturday & Sunday. You can really do that however you want, which I like. And my manager is pretty good about working around your schedule and making sure you get your requests off, but of course sometimes that doesn't always happen. We are also only allowed to request off 4 days/schedule, but that doesn't include PDO/vacation days.
