  1. I applied about two weeks before they called me. I dont know if I'm still considered a new grad...I have over 1 year hospital experience
  2. Are you currently still employed there? I have an interview soon and would like some insight on how it is to work there.
  3. 4 week cycle
  4. I started in corrections right out of school. They gave me great training and as a young female in a male facility I feel safer than I do in the hospital.
  5. keep trying and take whatever is available even if its not your first, second or even third choice...
  6. I work in corrections right out of school and have been there 6 months. It all depends on the facility you work at. My facility has young men (under 30) so most of them are fairly healthy. I have new grad co-workers who work at other prisons who said its worse when you have older/higher acuity inmates but its nothing they havent been able to handle. For me its been all about going with my gut and using the skills I learned in school and I havent had any problems (knocks on wood). I even work evenings which means there is no doctor in the building and if there is an emergency I am usually the only RN (in charge) and have to call an on-call doctor. I have learned so much. The biggest thing to get over is being in a prison enviornment.
  7. Im in NJ and a similar situation happened to me...I was fired from my job in my second semester of nursing school...Since I was able to prove I was working full-time and going to school full time I was able to collect until I found a job after graduation...I even did an externship and was able to collect the difference between what I made and my unemployment payments...
  8. I am interested in hearing the experiences of new grads who have taken jobs in corrections. I myself am a new grad and corrections seems like the only job interested in hiring/training me. I wanted some insight into what it is like to enter this specialty right out of school.
