Scheduling Dilemma

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a new nursing assistant at a fairly large hospital, and have been employed for about a month. When I first joined the team, I received my schedule from my nursing manager, which was complete until the end of January. The schedule indicated that I would work Christmas Eve, have Christmas off, have New Year's Eve off and work New Year's Day.

Today, I received a call from the hospital's nursing staff office asking why I wasn't at work. I expressed my concerns and indicated I was holding my schedule in front of me (given to me by my manager) that indicated I was scheduled to have New Year's Eve off and work New Year's Day. I was then transferred to my manager to discuss this further and she indicated the information I have is incorrect.

I am so frustrated and discouraged right now, because I am really enjoying this job. This was the one and ONLY schedule I received when I started, and there was no mention of any changes made to schedules. Any changes or communications are posted in your personal mailbox, and I have received no changes or communications since this original schedule.

My question is, has this happened to any of you out there? Any advice on how to proceed? I know I am 100% correct with my schedule information, and I feel that my manager completely dropped the ball on this. I'm bringing a copy of the paper schedule she gave me to show her, but I'm worried she will still come up with some excuse as to why this would be my fault, somehow.

I have always been a dedicated, loyal and hard-working employee with every job I've had. I won't be able to work in an environment where I'm put in situations like this, so I'm just really frustrated right now and completely puzzed as to how this could happen.

Any insight you guys could share would be highly appreciated. Thanks!!!

I had that happen when I took a float job between MSP and Rehab. I copied the MSP schedule, and had that at home. Got a call from Rehab asking where I was. I had my schedule in front of me. The Supervisor got the MSP schedule and said they didn't match, and I was supposed to be on Rehab that night. (I had worked MSP the night before, and had slept in, so I wasn't without sleep) I went in, worked the shift, then got a call the next night, asking why I wasn't on MSP. I told them that the supervisor made me come in and work Rehab, overriding the MSP schedule, and that it had put on for two shifts in a row...and per RN contract you can not schedule someone three 12 hr shifts in a row without permission. So I did not go in that night, and per contract they could not make me.

After that, the nurse managers got their acts together to check one schedule against the next.

I would bring in your copy and write something in your defence for your file.

Keep cool and just say the same thing again to anyone who needs to know.

If this mishap causes you a negative rap then I would question staying at the job.

I have had a similiar situation and everyone understood the issue. No blames were made, just an honest oops. \

I was scheduled to have a vactation and asked off for two weekends (I work weekends only) One week ended on one scheduled and the other week began the next schedule. I checked all days that I was off except one. (the first Sunday I was off which began the next schedule)

Needless to say I was overlooking the Niagara Falls when work called to ask where I was. I thought it was funny. My manager knew where I was going and guess forgot to take me off for one day. And I did not catch it either.

It happens.

I wuld bring in a copy of the schedule given to you and show it to your manager. I also wouldn't go in tonight if you have plans. It appears that you are working 2 holidays and have 2 off which seems fair and appropriate.

They might be trying to take advantage of you because you are new and people called out for NYE. They also might have changed the original schedule and failed to have mentioned that to you. Stand firm in a polite manner. You did nothing wrong.

If they try and write you up which I doubt will happen refuse to sign and attach a copy of your schedule to the write up. My guess is nothing more will come of this so try not to stress out and go and enjoy your night off.

I once worked at a hospital in austin Texas that did that, and was promptly told that it was my responsibility to check the schedule every night I worked as they would and could change it at their discretion. I got another job.

I just had something similar happen to me today. We're military and just relocated so I'm taking a new job at the local hospital. Well on all of my new hire paperwork etc. I was scheduled to start Monday the 5th. Well the HR lady calls me this morning and left a message making sure we were "still on the same page" about me starting on the 19th. She says she left me a message on the 12th of this month, but I received no message and never actually talked to her. I had no idea. To make it worse, I was there on the 15th doing my HR stuff and Employee Health screens and she didn't even mention it. It makes me wonder if she even called or is just trying to change it on me last minute.. It got passed to the director because I have a contract with a new daycare that I'm still going to have to pay for starting the 5th. Luckily, everything went my way and I start on the 5th *for now* haha.. But always keep copies of EVERYTHING.. you never know when you may need it. Luckily you have the schedule they gave you. Chances are they just changed it and accidentally overlooked telling you. Just make sure you handle it professionally. If it keeps happening, I would look for another unit. Don't let them take advantage of you because you are new. :)

I agree with others. Copy everything. Meet with your bosses and explain to them in no uncertain terms that they are responsible for notifying you about changes in scheduling when possible. There's really no excuse for changing a schedule and not notifying someone. It shows a complete lack of respect for the employee and lack of professionalism on the part of the organization.

I had this happen for the holidays as well; scheduled to have off Christmas Eve and work Christmas Day; have off New Year's Eve and work New Year's Day. Well, I got a call on Christmas Eve at 3:00 (work 3 - 11 shift) from the nursing supervisor asking why I was not at work.

I gave her a call back, letting her know what my schedule said, and I was holding it right in front of me. I refused to go in on Christmas Eve even though I was told there was a mistake on my schedule. I figured that it wasn't my problem. I had my schedule and I was following what it said.

The next day, when I went into work, I brought my schedule to the supervisor and we compared it to the schedule that she had. There were several mistakes between the schedules. She simply made a copy of my schedule and spoke with the head of staff development. She also stated that this was not the first time that something like this has happened.

Everything worked out though. I hope everything does so on your end as well.

Sounds like a mixup. I suggest taking your copy to show her, and remain calm, explaining yourself as eloquently as you did here. Good luck, hope things work out for you.

Thanks everyone for your posts. I do feel a little better after reading them. I'm bringing in my schedule today and will see what happens. Hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year's Eve!
