Scared and Giving up because of failed mathcourse!!!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hi everyone, I recently failed a math course in math but will be taking it over. Even though the failed grade does not show on transcripts what I earned will still be shown. Is this the end of the road for me? I dont know what to do at this point. Anyone admitted into the FIU Nursing program?

no!! don't worry u'll be fine!!!

Have you given thought to taking a lower level math course than the one you failed. It seems to me that failure in math courses is due to not understanding the underlying concepts, and you won't learn those by retaking the math class you just failed because you will be focused on learning new concepts that won't quite stick properly because you won't have mastery of the details.

Talk to a math counselor and see if they might be able to have you take a placement test and address you the areas of math that elude you.

I actually disagree with you student4_life about taking the placement tests. I failed my math placement test, as it had been a long time since I took math. I went right into calculus and statistics and got an A in each. Math is one of those things you know or don't know. I firmly believe that even though she failed it, she still has a chance.

I do understand what you are saying, but I think she just needs more practice. Unless the OP agrees with you, then I am off my rocker hahaha. No offense intended just my :twocents:

It took me 2 tries to understand moles/molarity in chemistry and now, what was I thinking, so simple. Math is the same, practice.

Saying you can understand advance math without knowing the basics is just silly. That's like saying you can make lasagna without knowing how to operate an oven. Everything in math builds upon what you should already know.

I agree that you need to go back a few steps. Since I took some math in college YEARS ago, they said I could go right into College Algebra. Whoa, no way, I wasn't ready for that. I actually chose to start at the beginning and took basic algebra (it wasn't even a for credit class) then I took Intermediate. I've seen people fail algebra twice because they weren't ready. You must understand all of the basics first before you can proceed. It may take an extra semester or two but it will be worth it in the end.

Some math concepts you get and others you don't. I took a quantitative math course and it all made perfect sense. It required the same basic maths that college algebra did. College algebra, on the other hand, was like a foreign language. Statistics was a breeze.

Math builds on itself.. but you can be strong in one area and terrible in another.

Why did you label your thread, "Scared and giving up because of failed math course?" when you aren't giving at all?

I'm glad to hear that you're retaking the course.

Thanks for all the replies, i will definitely take them into consideration. Im failing because I made a big mistake. I took the Statistics class with Chemistry. Im a freshman and didnt realize that both require ALOT of attention... So ofcourses sciences are the most important so I kind of just focused on that. Since Nursing is sooooo competitive I feel that they will just toss my application aside when they see I had to take the math over. Im bummed, but I never give up :(

I agree 100%. Honestly, I use to be real good at math until I started missing school (HS) and lost the train. In math when you miss a concept it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE for you to try to take a higher class and get it.

I tried that 7 years ago and failed. Found it looked like Chinese and I just gave up.

I went back now and this timer around, I'm taking a LOWER level which is basically pre algerbra even though I tested into algerbra (borderline) and just looking at the book and I know I will get it this time around. I'm not scared or dreading the class this time around.

Anyway, that's just an example but trust me it will help with any level of math. Also, since it's your focus to pass and possibly Ace the class then take your time and take easier classes with it. It's better to delay your entry to get good grades then to rush with mediocre ones.

And yes, NEVER give up.
